DR Congo FA President Arrested

Constant Omari, the president of the Democratic Republic of Congo Football Association (Fecofa), has been detained as part of a probe into embezzlement. Omari, who is also on the FIFA council and a vice-president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), is being held along with two Fecofa vice-presidents, Roger Bondembe and Theobad Binamungu, and sports ministry secretary-general Barthelemy Okito. The four are being questioned over the embezzlement of US$1m of public funding earmarked for the organisation of football matches involving national and club sides.

Fleetwood Make Barton Manager

The day after his ban for gambling on matches his team took part in, Joey Barton will be appointed as the new manager of Fleetwood Town, the League One side have announced. Barton has said: "I'm very excited by the challenge. It's a club I've known for a long time, and a chairman I already have a very good relationship with. My first job in management was always going to be a big decision and I'm delighted. I'm joining a club with big ambitions." It seems a very odd choice for a club that markets itself as a family-friendly club.

Man Utd Set To Appoint New COO

The executive director for Manchester Airports Group, Collette Roche, is set to be appointed as Manchester United's chief operating officer. She will become just the 7th woman to take an executive position at the 92 clubs in the top four divisions.

Police Officer Injured In Explosion During Sofia Local Derby

A police woman was taken to hospital after being seriously injured by an explosion at the Vasil Levski Stadium during Levski Sofia's Bulgarian league match with local city rivals CSKA Sofia. Police chief commissioner Anton Zlatanov said: "She underwent surgery but there are many pieces of glass on her face and in the eye. It's not a firework, it's a bomb." More than 20 Levski fans were detained by police. Despite the bomb, the game took place and ended in a 2-2 draw.

White Signs New Albion Deal

Brighton and Hove Albion's young defender Ben White, currently on loan with Newport County, has signed a new 3 year contract. The 20 year old Brighton academy graduate has impressed on loan, making 47 appearances so far this season for the Exiles. Seagulls manager Chris Hughton said: "I'm delighted for Ben and he is another example of a young player that has worked very hard to develop his game over the last couple of years. We have closely monitored his progress at Newport County and it is very pleasing to see him adapt so well to a very competitive standard of football in League Two."

Conte Claims Dyche Has It Easy

Antonio Conte has claimed that Sean Dyche has a much easier job managing Burnley than he does managing Chelsea. Conte said: "I think he is doing an important job. He is doing a great job this season. But if you start the season to fight to avoid the relegation zone it is more simple. It is more simple also if you have a small budget because you can count on a team that in the past reached qualification to play again in the league. It is more difficult when you have to prepare the transfer market to win something because only one team wins. The others must see the other team win. It is more simple because you have to avoid the last three places at the bottom and then you can stay between 10 teams. You can play only for this target. Then, if you have a good base and in the previous season played very well, you can count on this. You have to fight only to avoid this. It is difficult if you have to play to win because only one team wins and if the other doesn't win you are the first to speak about a failed season. If you don't win the FA Cup, the league, the Carabao Cup, the season is a failure and, for this reason, it is more difficult to play for this target." I am not sure I agree with Conte's logic in the slightest. The words deflection away from my own failings come to mind...

Proof The World Has Gone Mad

Police in Peru have seized more than 20,000 fake Panini 2018 World Cup sticker books with a 'street value' of roughly £250,000. Street value? I feel so old right now, when I was a kid the books were usually given away free so they could tempt you to start a collection, now they are being assigned street values like they are some kind of drug! Maybe that's the right way to treat the stickers though, as I cannot be the only person recently who has chosen their breakfast cereal purely on the basis that it comes with free stickers. Can I?

Rafael Hits Out At Van Gaal's Treatment Of Him

Former Man Utd full back Rafael da Silva has revealed in an interview with ESPN how he was treated by Louis van Gaal, and how the Dutch coach drove him out of Old Trafford. Rafael said: "When it was announced that Van Gaal was taking over, four or five people, including players, called me to say that he doesn't like Brazilian players. They pointed out what had happened with Rivaldo at Barcelona, but I didn't believe it. In his first season, Van Gaal called me to his office and said: 'You can leave'. The meeting lasted one minute. That was it: 'You can leave.' It took time for me to go, but I was desperate to leave when I did, and that saddens me because I loved everything about Manchester United. Van Gaal is not a bad coach, but I didn't like his character. One day, I was in the canteen waiting to eat. Van Gaal used to speak to us after we'd eaten each day. I had a head injury after a game at Yeovil - one of the few games I played in that season - and I was touching my injury. After three or four seconds, he touched my head and said: 'Why don't you respect me?' I stood up and said: 'I always respect you. I've never said anything which was disrespectful to you.' I am a patient guy, but I got angry then. I had done nothing wrong. Antonio [Valencia] later said to me: 'You're not going to play again.' Players didn't speak back to Van Gaal. Antonio was almost right; I barely played again. I love Manchester United, but I was so desperate to leave United. Only one man did that because I liked everything about the place. I couldn't handle him anymore." Three days after completing his move to Lyon, Rafael says he received an unexpected text from van Gaal: "Van Gaal texted me to say: 'You know how football is.' I couldn't believe it. He didn't speak to me and then texted me to wish me well."

Bare Gets Nine Match Ban

Atletico Madrid midfielder Keidi Bare has been handed a nine match ban for abusing officials during a B team match. The Albanian was booked, continued to argue with the ref and so received a red card. The referee's report stated: "At the end of the first half, when we tried to enter our dressing-room the player was found in the doorway, referring to us in the same terms as before on repeated occasions." Bare has been banned one match for the yellow cards and 8 matches for his abusive behaviour towards the match officials.
