Review of the Day

Transfers

Mansfield Town have signed veteran midfielder Neal Bishop following his release from Scunthorpe United.

Junior Brown has chosen to sign for Coventry City. The 29 year old was out of contract at Shrewsbury Town after three seasons with the Shropshire club.

Porto full-back Diogo Dalot has been bought by Manchester United. The 19 year old only made his debut for the Portugese giants in October after graduating through their youth system.

Preston North End have signed a goalkeeper. 22 year old Michael Crowe was released by Ipswich Town, despite making it into the Wales squad for recent friendlies.

Sam Matthews is set to sign for Bristol Rovers when his Bournemouth contract expires at the end of the month. The young midfielder had made no impression on the first team with the Cherries.

After helping Sunderland to consecutive relegations as captain of the club, John O'Shea has signed for Reading for next season.

Celtic striker Nadir Ciftci has cancelled the final year of his contract and is leaving the club at the end of the month.

Juan Iturbe, the former Argentinian youth international now Paraguayan winger, who once spent some time on loan with Bournemouth from AS Roma, has swapped Mexican clubs. The 25 year old has left Club Tijuana to move to UNAM Pumas.

Also in Mexico, Monterrey have paid over £13m to bring in midfielder Rodolfo Pizarro from Guadalajara.

Another player who spent a short spell on the English south coast is Filip Djuricic, who had a loan to Southampton while with Benfica. The 26 year old has been released by Sampdoria.

Imps Elect New Chairman

Lincoln City have elected a new chairman after Bob Dorrian stepped down. Dorrian had been in the role for eight years. He has been replaced by Clive Nates, who joined the board in February 2016.

Villa Begin Paying Tax Bill

With fears of administration swirling around Aston Villa over an unpaid tax bill of £4m, the Midlands club have begun the process of paying it off, despite owner Tony Xia's 'short-term cash flow problems'. A first payment of £500,000 has been made, with a second payment of £1.2m expected by the end of the week, to give the club time to raise funds in the longer term.

Croatia's Football Godfather Jailed

Zdravko Mamic has held dual roles as vice-president of the Croatian Football Federation and chief executive of Dinamo Zagreb, making him one of, if not the, most powerful men in Croatian football. However there have been suspicions of wrongdoing following him for a while, with Dinamo fans protesting about his reign, claiming he and his allies had been using the club to siphon off money and evade taxes. After a lengthy investigation, authorities in Croatia agreed with the fans and, in 2015, Zdravko and his brother Zoran, the Dinamo coach, were both arrested. Now the courts have also decided the fans were correct all along with jail terms handed out to Zdravko and Zoran Mamic, former Dinamo director Damir Vrbanovic and a tax inspector, Milan Pernar. The case has had a knock on effect with a number of ex-Dinamo players caught up in the trial, including Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric, who faces perjury charges over the evidence he gave. He is accused of making false statements when questioned about his 2008 transfer from Zagreb to Tottenham Hotspur.

Rose Reveals Depression

England and Tottenham full-back Danny Rose has revealed he was diagnosed with depression this season, after struggling with injuries and unable to regain his place in the side. That came on top of a number of incidents which affected the 27 year old, his uncle committing suicide, his mother being racially abused and someone nearly shooting his brother in his house. Rose admits he never told his family, despite seeing a psychologist.

Barnsley Appoint Stendel

Following the success of Jurgen Klopp with Liverpool and David Wagner with Huddersfield Town, it seems German coaches are now fashionable in English football. Barnsley have followed the trend by looking to German coach Daniel Stendel to replace the outgoing Jose Morais. Stendel's only previous role in management was with Hannover 96, who socred 50 goals in 28 matches under his charge.
