Review of the Day

Hazard Says Cole Convinced Him To Sign For Chelsea

Eden Hazard admits it was Joe Cole who convinced him to join Chelsea, when the two played together at Lille. Cole was on loan from Liverpool in the 2011/12 season and spent most of it telling Hazard he should sign for Chelsea. Hazard said: "I spoke to him before I signed for Chelsea. Every day, seriously, he was telling me that Chelsea was the best club for me. He said Chelsea was a big club where you can win trophies every season. For that reason I signed, so thank you, Joe Cole!"

Samson Quits Saints For Mackems Role

St Mirren goalkeeper Craig Samson (am I the only one disappointed that a guy with the name Samson has short hair?) has retired from playing to join former St Mirren manager Jack Ross's coaching staff at Sunderland. Part of the deal will see him return in the summer for a friendly match between the two clubs. Samson said: "I know it's not ideal timing, but it was an opportunity I couldn't pass up on. We talked about the option of staying until January but we all agreed it was best that we let the club go on."

Barry Returns From Injury

37 year old Gareth Barry has returned from injury to play for West Bromwich Albion's Under-21s in the Checkatrade Trophy. Barry managed 45 minutes but failed to stop his team losing to bottom of League Two Macclesfield Town 2-1.

Ref Suspended Over Rock, Paper, Scissors Game

Referee David McNamara has been suspended for 3 weeks after he decided a Women's Super League game's kick off with a game of rock, paper, scissors rather than the proscribed coin toss. The FA women's refereeing manager Joanna Stimpson said: "The referee forgot his coin and in that moment, in a TV game, he was really pushed for time. He should have been more prepared, he should have had a coin. It was disappointing, it's not appropriate, it's very unprofessional."

Solari Confirmed As Permanent Manager

Real Madrid have appointed Santiago Solari as their permanent manager on a contract until 2021. Well, as permanent as it gets with Madrid, as the moment results go against them he will be on his way and they had run out of time to find someone else, having only 2 weeks according to Spanish league rules, to use him as an interim manager. Solari has won four game out of four since taking over from Julen Lopetegui at the end of October.

Brentford Technical Director Passes Away Aged Just 28

The technical director of Championship side Brentford, Robert Rowan, has died at the age of just 28. The Scot had originally been working in a bank, aged just 23, when he was offered a job with the Bees, working with their scouting department. He had worked as sporting director of Stenhousemuir and as a scout and analyst for both Celtic and the Scottish FA, before his role with Brentford. Up until February he had been head of football operations with Brentford, when his good work was rewarded with a promotion to technical director. R.I.P.

Trippier Withdraws From England Squad

Tottenham Hotspur right-back Kieran Trippier has followed Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck in withdrawing from the England squad with injury. Trippier picked up a groin problem in the win over Crystal Palace at the weekend.

Nelson Gets Monthly Award

On-loan Arsenal forward Reiss Nelson has been awarded the Bundesliga's Rookie of the Month award for October after bursting onto the scene with loan club Hoffenheim. Nelson already has 6 goals in the Bundesliga this season and scored 3 of them, as well as notching an assist, in October.

Joe Cole Retires

This surprised me as I was pretty sure he retired from playing the day he signed for Liverpool, but Joe Cole has retired from playing at the age of 37. It must have just been training, judging by the size of him, that he quit on signing for Liverpool. Cole initially came through the West Ham United youth system, before joining Chelsea for the most successful spell of his career, in 2003. Since then he has 'played' for Liverpool, Lille, Aston Villa and Coventry City, before going into semi-retirement in the United Soccer League with Tampa Bay Rowdies in 2016. He has been described as the best 12 year old footballer of all time, the peak of his career.

Premier League Appoint New CEO

The global president of the Animal Planet channel, Susanna Dinnage, has been appointed the new chief executive of the Premier League, becoming just the 3rd person to run the league after Richard Scudamore and Rick Parry. Dinnage said: "I am excited at the prospect of taking on this fantastic role. The Premier League means so much to so many people. It represents the pinnacle of professional sport and the opportunity to lead such a dynamic and inspirational organisation is a great privilege. With the support of clubs and the team, I look forward to extending the success of the league for many years to come." Dinnage is a Fulham season ticket holder but has no previous experience in the football industry, worryingly her experience is all as a media executive at a time when the fans are being treated appallingly to bow to the demands made by TV.

Scudamore To Be Given £5m Bonus

Poor Richard Scudamore was only on £2.5m a season, so it is no surprise that the 20 Premier League clubs are being asked to pay £250,000 each towards a £5m pay-off as a farewell gift, as he is set to leave his post as Premier League chief executive. Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck, who just happens to be a close friend of Scudamore, has made the suggestion because of Scudamore's 'successful tenure'. What he actually means is success in making lots of money, not in success as in terms of improving the league or the experience it provides to paying punters. Would that £5m not be better spent on reducing the ticket prices than giving Scudamore more money?

Snodgrass Donates To Just Giving Fund

West Ham United midfielder Robert Snodgrass has donated £3,000 to the justgiving fund of young West Ham fan Isla Caton to help pay for her treatment for neuroblastoma. The family have had to raise the target to £600,000 to pay for specialist treatment for the 4 year old, with the backing of the Bradley Lowery Foundation.

Arnautovic Admits He Has Knee Problem

Hammers forward Marko Arnautovic has admitted he needs injections in his knee due to fluid build up between games. Arnautovic said: "I can not say if I'll get an injection on Thursday. In the knee, fluid accumulates again and again. Of course, there are people who say they should spare themselves and do nothing for a week, but it's just difficult. The knee is not the best, I'm fit, I can play, but I'm not training a lot, also at West Ham and I try to recover my knee. It's going to take some time, I've got some inflammation in my bone but I am always ready to play on the weekend so it's just one of those things. Obviously after a game, I need some rest, like two or three days, but then middle of the week I am training normal with the team and training full and on the weekend I play, that's the most important thing. Obviously you can't do anything on this bone bruise, you can't change it, you can't do nothing, you just have to treat it good, you have to settle it down but I can handle the pain."

Murray Extends Seagulls Deal

Currently the highest scoring English player in the Premier League, Brighton and Hove Albion's striker Glenn Murray has another reason to be happy now as he has extended his contract with the club. His contract had been set to expire at the end of the season. Manager Chris Hughton said: "We are delighted to have extended Glenn's contract. He has proved a vital member of the team and his goals have been crucial to us. Glenn has scored consistently for us, first in helping us win promotion, and now in the Premier League as we seek to establish ourselves at the top level. He's proved himself at the very top late in his career, and his professionalism and approach on and off the pitch is a big factor in why he's still doing it now. After recently reaching the 100-goal mark for the club, I know Glenn will be hungry to add more goals to that tally, and I am pleased he's extended his time with the club."

New Celta Manager Mixes Up Teams

New Celta Vigo manager Miguel Cardoso has already found a way upset the club's fans by mixing them up with bitter local rivals Deportivo La Coruna in his very first press conference. Cardoso has previously worked as assistant manager at Depor and was only appointed new Celta manager on Tuesday and was introduced to the press saying: "I want to thank the president and the sporting director for showing faith in me and my coaching staff to start a new era at Deportivo.. I mean Celta." Next week he will be releasing his book on how to make friends and influence people in football....

Messi Facing New Court Battle

Barcelona's Argentine megastar Lionel Messi is facing yet another court battle, this time in Girona, Spain over breach of contract. A local builder is attempting to sue both Messi and his father over a claim that he helped the family with finances, after a disagreement with then-president of Barcelona Joan Laporta left the family struggling for money. The builder claims that he employed Messi's father in return for a fee of between 1 and 3% of the player's fees when he broke into the first team.

Udinese Change Manager

Udinese have sacked head coach Julio Velazquez and replaced him with Davide Nicola following the defeat by Empoli on Sunday. Velazquez had won 2, drawn 3 and lost 8 and were on a poor run of form with just one point in the last 7 Serie A rounds. It is Nicola's first job since being sacked by Crotone in December 2017.

Monaco Investigated Over Their Youth Player Recruitment

Football Leaks has leaked reports claiming AS Monaco broke youth player recruitment rules, which the French football federation and professional league are looking into. Monaco are denying any wrongdoing.
