Review of the Day

Jeanvier Escapes Spitting Ban

The Football Association are to take no action against Brentford defender Jean Jeanvier after he admitted spitting near to West Bromwich Albion supporters. Jeanvier's momentum took him off the pitch towards the end of the match and he received a volley of verbal excuse from Baggies' fans in the area. He admitted to spitting near them and apologised. A Brentford statement read: "Brentford FC has made it very clear to Julian that such behaviour is unacceptable. The matter has been dealt with internally and is now considered closed. Brentford Football Club received complaints and enquiries about the behaviour of defender Julian Jeanvier in the last minutes of the Championship match against West Bromwich Albion on March 16. We also heard from the Football Association about the incident and Julian provided the governing body with a statement and the club supplied video footage. Subsequently, the club has been told there are no plans by the FA to bring any charges against Julian. However, in discussions with Julian, the defender has admitted spitting in the proximity of West Bromwich Albion fans. He has asked that the club publish this as an apology to any supporters involved in the incident."

Somalia Look To Improve Rankings

Somalia have been on a long road trying to build a competitive national league in the midst of an ongoing civil war, in the hope of raising the national team up from its current ranking of 204 of the 211 countries in FIFA competitions. Currently Somalia are the joint lowest ranked African team, level with Eritrea, but are hoping that the appointment of Ghanaian coach Bashir Hayford will change that. Hayford was previously coaching in women's football, leading Ghana into last year's Women's Africa Cup of Nations, and has been handed a blueprint to work with local coaches and players to improve the country's ranking.

Nike Fined Over Sale Restrictions

The European Commission has fined Nike after it found the company guilty of restricting the sale of certain football clubs' merchandise that carried club branding but no Nike trademark. Competition commissioner Margrethe Vestager said: "Football fans often cherish branded products from their favourite teams. Nike prevented many of its licensees from selling these branded products in a different country leading to less choice and higher prices for consumers." Nike were fined a total of 12.5m euros for their actions, which took place between 2004 and 2017, but that included a 40% discount for their co-operation with the investigation. A commission statement explained: "Nike co-operated with the commission beyond its legal obligation to do so, in particular by providing the commission with information that allowed it to extend the scope of the case. As a result, the investigation included ancillary sport merchandise of a number of additional clubs." The clubs affected included Manchester United, Barcelona, Juventus, Inter Milan and AS Roma, as well as national federations they supplied, such as France.

Scunny Sack McCall

Stuart McCall, who only took charge of Scunthorpe United in August after they dismissed Nick Daws after just 4 games of the season, has been sacked by the club. The Iron had dropped to within 2 points of the relegation places in League One after sitting mid-table in January. First-team coach Andy Dawson has once more been asked to take caretaker charge of the club, his 4th time around as caretaker.

McCarthy Speaks Out Against Irish Protests

Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy has asked fans to find another place and time to protest against the FAI and their appointment of former chief executive John Delaney as executive vice-president. Delaney only stepped down as chief executive on Saturday, following revelations that he had provided a 100,000 euro cheque to the FAI in April 2017 which 'failed to appear' in its audited accounts. Delaney claimed he had loaned the money to his employers "to aid a very short-term cash flow issue". It has been suggested that Republic fans will throw tennis balls onto the Aviva Stadium pitch during Euros qualifier against Georgia in protest at Delaney's continued employment but McCarthy said: "I can't do anything about it. I'm not going to take a tennis racket with me. If that is the case - I've been at games, I was at Charlton when people have done it - it's not going to help us play any better, that's for sure. So I hope that's not the case. They want us to win by giving us the best chance - [they can do that] by getting behind us and not having any outside influences affecting us."

Headway Urge UEFA To Investigate Swiss-Georgia Game

Brain injury charity Headway have asked UEFA to investigate why UEFA's own head injury protocols were not followed during Switzerland's Euro 2020 qualifier against Georgia. Both Switzerland defender Fabian Schar and Georgia's Jemal Tabidze were knocked unconscious in the 24th minute but were allowed to play on, despite Schar needing emergency lifesaving action and Tabidze spending several moments lying motionless on the ground with blood all over his shirt. Headway's chief executive Peter McCabe said: "What is it going to take to make football take concussion seriously? How many more players will have their careers and, more importantly, their lives and long-term health put at risk by the sport's inability to follow its own protocols? Put simply, the decision to allow Fabian Schar to return to the field of play after suffering a clear concussion was not only incredibly dangerous, but also a clear dereliction of duty. The player's comments after the match are also deeply disturbing and again show the lack of awareness and understanding among players. Uefa must immediately launch an investigation into the incident and explain why their protocols were not followed." Schar had said: "It looks awful. I can't remember anything. I was out for a few seconds. My skull is still humming. And I've got neck ache and a bruise on my forehead. But it was worth it." The Swiss have since withdrawn Schar from their match with Denmark today.

McAllister Assaulted

Former Leeds United and Liverpool player Dominic Matteo has revealed that Gary McAllister, who also played for both clubs, was attacked outside a bar in Leeds city centre while waiting for a taxi with his wife. McAllister, currently working as Rangers' assistant manager, required hospital treatment after what Matteo described as a "totally unprovoked and very vicious" attack. He also suggested the injuries were so severe that the attacker may have been wearing a knuckleduster. Matteo said that McAllister had lost 3 teeth and needed plastic surgery and stitches after being punched in the face. Police have not named McAllister but have confirmed they are investigating an assault: "The initial report was that a man, aged in his 50s, was stood outside a bar when a man approached him and punched him in the face causing injuries that required hospital treatment. We are currently arranging to speak to the victim to take fuller details of the incident and will be progressing the investigation to identify the person responsible."

Cardiff Continue To Shirk Sala Payments

Cardiff City have still not begun payments for Emiliano Sala, as they seek to avoid paying Nantes for the striker who tragically died in a plane crash before getting to play for the Bluebirds. Cardiff are now set to claim that the deal was not legally binding in an attempt to avoid being found guilty of breach of contract. The BBC have also said that the Premier League rejected the arrangements for a signing-on fee, as it had not met league rules.

England Suffer Racial Abuse

England are sat to make an official complaint to UEFA after a number of their players suffered racist abuse from Montenegro fans during their 5-1 win in a Euro 2020 qualifier. Manager Gareth Southgate said: "It is unacceptable. I definitely heard abuse of Danny Rose when he got booked. There's no doubt in my mind it happened. I know what I heard. We have to make sure our players feel supported, they know the dressing room is there and we as a group of staff are there for them. We have to report it through the correct channels. It is clear that so many people have heard it and we have to continue to make strides in our country and trust the authorities to take the right action." The best response was that of a Raheem Sterling, who scored England's 5th then celebrated by putting his hands to his ears. At least one object was thrown at England players as well, with Callum Hudson-Odoi retrieving it.
