Review of the Day

Contracts

Valencia midfielder Uros Racic has signed a 4 year contract.

Transfers

Scottish international Callum Paterson was left out of Cardiff City's squad this weekend as he is close to a move to Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

Ross County have signed striker Michael O'Connor from League of Ireland's Waterford.

Olympiacos have paid £900,000 for SC Freiburg's right-back Mohamed Drager.

Former Watford midfielder Uche Agbo has joined Deportivo La Coruna from Standard Liege.

Injury Round-Up

Sheffield United may be without centre-back Jack O'Connell for the rest of the season after the 26 year old suffered a knee injury. Chris Wilder said: "Jack O'Connell is possibly out for the season and needs a knee operation. He tried to come back and then had to have a scan. It is a huge blow for him and us. He adjusted pretty quickly and established himself in the Premier League last season."

Managerial Changes

Former Huddersfield Town manager David Wagner has been sacked by Schalke 04 after his team lost their first two games of the season. That made it 16 without a win for the Bundesliga side. Sporting director Jochen Schneider said: "We had all hoped that we could improve on the pitch together with David Wagner. Unfortunately, we haven't seen the right performances and results from the first two games for this to happen. We have therefore decided to make a fresh start. Despite the disappointing results, this wasn't an easy decision for us to make."

Disciplinary Charges

Games Off For Fishy People

Grimsby Town chairman Philip Day has told the BBC that their next two matches will also be postponed, after Saturday's match at Cheltenham Town was called off due to a positive coronavirus test. They are due to face Bradford City on 3rd October in League Two and then Hull City in the EFL Trophy three days later.

Handball Rules Draws Wrath Of Managers

Premier League managers have condemned the changes to the handball rules after a spate of penalties this season. Roy Hodgson saw his Crystal Palace side lose 2-1 to Everton after a penalty for Everton was awarded after Palace defender Joel Ward was adjudged to have been guilty of handling a ball struck at him from close range. Hodgson said after the match: "It's completely unacceptable. It's destroying my enjoyment of the game of football. I can't understand how everyone in the game - the Premier League, referees, managers and coaches - have allowed this rule to come into operation. I don't want to profit from it or lose from it. I predict what will happen is players will start flicking the ball onto a hand and screaming 'handball'. I do not believe in the rule. People in football find it hard to accept. The referee doesn't think it is handball either. He doesn't want to give it but has to, because that's what he is told to do." Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce joined Hodgson in complaining about the rule change, despite it awarding his team the penalty which rescued a draw for them against Tottenham Hotspur. Bruce said: "The handball has been around for a hundred years. If it is deliberate, no problem, but it has to be clear and obvious. We have lost the plot with it and it loses the spectacle of it. Maybe we can do something about it, we seem to have these phases where we take everything literally in the Premier League and maybe we have to say no to it."

Dyche Calls For Signings

Burnley manager Sean Dyche is looking for new players following their 1-0 defeat at the hands of Southampton and their former striker Danny Ings. The Clarets lost a number of players in the summer on free transfers, much to the publicly stated ire of Dyche towards the club's chairman, and are now short of seven senior players at the start of the season. Dyche said after the game: "The chairman knows what is required. Action. We need players. It is a challenge though, here, it always has been. We have two experienced defenders on the bench and that is it. We are reliant on what we have. It is a challenge but we will have players back fit. We have been very unfortunate with injuries. We are stretched. The players are giving me everything. I've mentioned it for a number of months now - it's down to the chairman and the board to make those decisions."

Pep Complains About Fixtures

Pep Guardiola has kicked off the annual gripefest from Premier League managers moaning about the league schedule ahead of the 5-2 defeat against Leicester City. After Jesus joined Sergio Aguero, Bernardo Silva, Joao Cancelo and Oleksandr Zinchenko on the Manchester City treatment tables Guardiola said: "Nobody cares about the players. It is about the business. The reality is what it is. It is not just Man City, it is all the clubs and countries. Nobody cares about the players. Everyone - the Premier League, Uefa, EFL - has defended their own business and position. The players had a two-week pre-season and now they have to play every three days for 11 months. We will not change anything saying the opposite. I understand it is an exceptional situation for everyone - restaurants, theatres, cinemas, museums. Everyone is struggling. We are not an exception. We have to believe in what we are doing and try and play a good game. We have three players who came back from national teams injured. We cannot control that. They let them play two games in four days without preparation. They are not machines."
