Contracts

Former Leeds United and Liverpool goalkeeper Scott Carson has extended his contract with current Premier League champions Manchester City for one more season.

Stoke City midfielder Lewis Baker has signed a new 3-year deal with the Potteries club.

Antony Evans has extended his stay with Bristol Rovers until 2025.

Mark Shelton has signed a new contract with Hartlepool United.

Mattia Aramu has signed a 2-year deal with Venezia.

Spanish defender Diego Gonzalez has agreed a 2-year contract with Elche.

Ross County have given David Cancola a 1-year deal.

Transfers

Liverpool have completed the signing of Uruguay international striker Darwin Nunez for an initial fee of £64m from Benfica, subject to international clearance and work permit. There are potentially another £21m in add-ons to be paid, which would make him Liverpool's record signing.

Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a fee with Brighton & Hove Albion for Mali midfielder Yves Bissouma.

AS Roma boss Jose Mourinho has once again signed Nemanja Matic. Mourinho took him to Chelsea first, then bought him from Chelsea when he was Manchester United manager. Now he has taken him from Manchester United on a free transfer to reunite with him at Roma.

Jonjoe Kenny has left Everton on a free transfer to sign for Hertha Berlin.

Celtic midfielder Kerr McInroy has signed for Kilmarnock on a free transfer.

Former Sheffield United defender Ben Heneghan has agreed to join Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer from AFC Wimbledon.

Peterborough United have taken Ben Thompson on a free transfer from Gillingham.

Connor Lemonheigh-Evans has signed for Stockport County on a free transfer from Torquay United.

Harrogate Town have picked up Stephen Dooley on a free transfer from Rochdale.

After leaving Woking at the end of his contract, Solomon Nwabuokei has signed for Barrow.

Tranmere Rovers have signed Ethan Bristow following the young defender's release by Reading.

Former Chelsea youngster Charlie Colkett has left Cheltenham Town and signed for Crewe Alexandra on a free.

Stade Reims have signed teenage defender Kobi Henry from Orange County, in what is a record transfer fee for the USL Championship. Ligue 1 side Reims are spending an initial fee of around $700,000, which could rise to $1m.

1. FC Cologne have signed Steffen Tigges from Borussia Dortmund. Also leaving Dortmund is Stefan Drljaca. The goalkeeper is signing for Dynamo Dresden.

Dries Mertens has been released by Napoli after admitting "nobody called me" to discuss a contract extension. The news has infuriated Napoli fans with the hashtag #IoStoConMertens (I Stand With Mertens) now trending in Italy as unpopular club president Aurelio De Laurentiis faces a storm of criticism.

The agent for teenage Udinese wing-back Destiny Udogie has said he has had an "initial, pleasant chat" with Inter Milan about him.

Lucas Torreira has confirmed that his permanent move to Fiorentina from Arsenal has fallen through.

Injury Round Up

Sevilla defender and Chelsea summer signing target Jules Kounde has finally had surgery on the injury that has been troubling him for months. Sevilla have a history of asking players to play through problems, with Brazilian Fernando Reges putting off surgery for months until finally being forced to have an operation in March.

New Napoli signing Mathias Olivera has assuaged fears over his knee injury he picked up while on international duty with Uruguay. The 24-year-old has revealed it was a sprain to the knee and that he expects to be fit for the start of pre-season training next month.



Managerial Changes

Burnley have appointed former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany as their new boss. Kompany moved into management full-time two years ago with Anderlecht, who he left in May by mutual consent. Kompany had led the Belgian side to 4th and 3rd in his two seasons as manager, before moving to join a Burnley side that was recently relegated from the Premier League and faces significant financial issues.

Tam Courts has left Dundee United by mutual agreement. The 40-year-old was given permission to speak to Croat side Rijeka last week after a season in charge in which he led the club to 4th in the SPFL and a Europa Conference League place for next season.

Blackburn Rovers have turned to former Newcastle United forward Jon Dahl Tomasson as their new head coach following the end of the Tony Mowbray era. Tomasson, a former Denmark international, won two consecutive Swedish league titles while in charge of Malmo FF and joins on the back of that success.

Despite leading them to the MLS Cup, former Celtic manager Ronny Deila has left New York City FC to take charge of Standard Liege. Nick Cushing has been placed in caretaker charge of NYCFC while they search for a permanent appointment. Deila's MLS Cup was the first professional championship won by any New York-based team in over a decade.

Serie A's Hellas Verona have turned to former Crawley Town head coach Gabriele Cioffi to lead them for next season.

Disciplinary Charges

In the French league, Girondins Bordeaux are to be relegated to the third tier, the Championnat National, for next season due to their financial situation. The club were audited by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) ahead of the new season and, with debts estimated to be around 40m euros, they were handed another relegation, on top of the one they suffered on the pitch after finishing the season in 18th place in Ligue 1. Bordeaux have stated that they will appeal what they called a "brutal" decision.

While Bordeaux face problems over their financial affairs, a club formerly owned by Bordeaux's owner, LOSC Lille, have been told they will face no sanctions over theirs. Lopez while in ownership of Lille took them into such financial problems that he was ousted by creditors. But the club have agreed a plan of action involving the sales of players to raise funds and improve the club's financial situation. Which is better than another club owned by Lopez, the Belgian side Mouscron that he bought in 2020. In 2021 they were relegated and this May they were liquidated.

Laporta Has Fresh Whinge About State-Owned Clubs

Despite the Spanish big-two having years of domination of European football due to state-funding and helping hands, Barcelona president Joan Laporta has hit out at state-owned clubs for causing "instability" in football and for "not using the same tools to compete". Of course he is referring to Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain who have taken the methods and state backing given to Barca and Madrid to a new level, but it is only the exact same process happening there. Laporta whined: "The state clubs are a problem because they provoke an instability of our sport, of football in Europe. I'm asking for rules that have to be more strict for these kinds of clubs because the resources they are using in football doesn't come from the football industry. In our case, and most of the clubs in Europe, the resources that we are generating come from the industry of sports ... and these state clubs are not using the same tools in order to compete. It is complicated to compete with these clubs that have a lot of big players spread around the world. And when you go to the market to buy players, it's difficult to compete. I ask the regulators like Uefa and leagues of each country to be stricter, or at least harmonise all the rules. Because, for instance, in Spain we have rules much more strict than in France or the Premier League." Strange how he never had a problem with funds coming from outside the football industry to fund Barcelona in the past. It only seems to have become an issue now other teams are using them to pull ahead of the Spanish teams.
