Football News: Deadline day damp squib

I am just now emerging from the torpor set on by the most boring transfer deadline day ever. In fact the whole January transfer window barely managed a noticeable transfer. The most noticeable ones were probably the peculiarities that happened, rather than the big moves, what few of them there were.

While that might seem more financially prudent, to have spending restricted so much bby FFP regs, it will have a knock on effect in terms of money, in a negative way. Without the excitement of the new signings to go along to watch in January, those who are struggling to make ends meet after Christmas are less likely to go to the games than they would be.

There is also the knock on effect to merchandising, which is in the post-Christmas slump of all retail, without the boost of new names to put on the back of shirts. Once the window shuts, the enthusiasm of fans is locked at that moment for the rest of the season. This season I doubt many fans are particularly enthused for the run in.

Sadly the wall to wall coverage of the Premier League has cast a great shadow over the rest of the game, with interesting stories from the lower leagues getting barely a mention. I mean who would have thought a former Real Madrid and Liverpool winger would end up signing for Accrington Stanley (who are they?).

Instead we will just hear about Wilfried Bony signing for Manchester City and Juan Cuadrado joining Chelsea, even though neither really stand out as massive signings in the context of the team they are joining. Maybe it is just me, maybe I am just jaded with the whole of football at the moment, but I just can't get excited this year by deadline day and that is affecting how eagerly I anticapte the rest of the season.
