Football News: The Queen Of Hearts

The Queen Of Hearts

When you look at Heart Of Midlothian these days, it is difficult not to have admiration for what Ann Budge has done for them. I have even read Hibernian fans wishing she was their owner instead of Tom Farmer.

While I do agree that she has worked wonders to rescue Hearts and rebuild them towards turning the club over to the Foundation of Hearts (FoH) in the near future, it is now that her work really begins. So far it has all been rosey in the Ediburgh garden as Robbie Neilson led the team straight back to the SPFL as champions of the Scottish Championship.

It is now that the balancing act needs to be done right, or the club could topple over and off the tightrope into the abyss of oblivion, in the worst case. This is time for Ann Budge to be strong on her spending limits, but also make sure the funds are spent on the right players.

There is no reason to believe she will allow the club to drop back into financial difficulties, but what checks and measures can she put in place to ensure FoH will not get carried away chasing success on the pitch? Will she be able to rein them in when they, as fans are wont to do, see the glint of possible trophies and want to spend to win them?

The long term future of Hearts depends more on how the handover to FoH is handled than anything that will happen on the pitch next season. Handled correctly and Hearts can put themselves right to the front of the pack chasing Celtic for the next couple of years.
