Reading Transfer Window Round Up
Image from: london-irish.com

The last few seasons have been difficult for Reading, as they struggled to rebuild, but this season hope has been rekindled in the transfer window, despite the club allowing Hope to leave on a free transfer! Reading are, on the face of it, a club on the up, with a good chance of pushing for promotion this season. All a long way from the last couple of seasons were they seemed to be in free fall with worries over ownership.

Now Reading have a Thai consortium in control, willing to invest in pursuit of success, they will be expecting Steve Clarke to produce, and the pressure will be on him. He did arrest the slide and put the club on an even keel, but he has yet to show that he can do more than that as a manager, despite being extremely successful as a coach. This season will be his chance to prove himself as a manager in his own right.

The outs:

Michael Hector has been sold for Chelsea, though he is going to also feature in the ins, due to returning on loan for the season. The young centre back will hope that his future will contain more than just loan spells away from Chelsea.

Danny Guthrie has been allowed to move on a free, joining Blackburn Rovers.

Jem Karacan, the one-time up and coming shining star of the club has left for Galatasaray on a free transfer. Injuries have caused his star to wane in recent years, but Gala will hope to keep him clear of injuries and get him to finally achieve his potential.

Alex Pearce, not so long ago being linked with big money moves to the Premier League, has left for Derby County on a free transfer.

Hope Akpan has followed the same path as Guthrie, also joining Blackburn Rovers on a free.

Robert Dickie has moved on loan to Cheltenham Town.

Jure Travner has left for NK Celje on a free move.

Craig Tanner has gone on loan to Plymouth Argyle.

Shepherd Murombedzi joins Torquay United on a free transfer.

Yakubu Aiyegbeni has gone to Kayserispor for free.

Adam Federici has moved up to Premier League new boys Bournemouth on a free transfer.

Jonathan Henly has joined the merry band of free signings at Ipswich Town.

Stephen Kelly was released but has yet to find a new team.

George McLennan has moved on a free deal to Cheltenham Town.

Lasha Dvali has joined Hamburg.

Mikkel Andersen has returned home to Denmark to join the FC Midtjylland stats-built team.

Pavel Pogrebnyak has headed to Dynamo Moscow.

Jake Taylor has moved to Motherwell on loan.

Aaron Kuhl has also gone to Scotland, to join Dundee United on loan.

Dan Lincoln, Zat Knight and Ryan Edwards have all been released.

The ins:

Orlando Sa has arrived from Legia Warsaw. The Portugese centre forward has returned to English football hoping for more success than he managed while with Fulham.

Stephen Quinn will bring hustle and bustle in midfield after joining from newly relegated Hull City on a free deal.

Paul McShane, the combative defender, has also arrived on a free transfer from Hull City. Clarke will be hoping their Premier League experience is vital this season.

Lisandro Semedo has arrived on a free from Sporting Clube de Portugal (better known in England as Sporting Lisbon). He came through their famed youth academy, widely acknowledged as amongst the best in Europe. The 19 year old is seen as one for the future, but could well be a surprise package this season.

Michael Hector left for Chelsea, but the deal brought him straight back to the club on a season long loan deal.

Ali Al-Habsi has come on a free transfer from Wigan Athletic. The experienced keeper will be looking to push his way into the team on a regular basis.

Matej Vydra has come on loan from Watford. Just a few seasons ago he was ripping the division apart, but has failed to impress ever since. Steve Clarke will be hoping he can return back to his best.

Lucas Piazon has joined new team mate Hector on loan from Chelsea. The Brazilian will be hoping to impress enough to force his way into the first team picture at Stamford Bridge.

Paulo Hurtado is another arrival from Portugese football. The Peruvian winger has joined from Pacos Ferreira.

Ola John has also come from Portugal, the Dutch forward moves from Benfica on loan.

Alex Fernandez is also a loan signing, this time from Espanyol.

Andrew Taylor has joined on loan from Wigan Athletic.

Jonathon Bond will be looking to fight with Al-Habsi for the number one jersey after he signed from Watford.

This was mainly a window of consolidation, not a lot of money spent on transfer fees, but a lot of exciting, young, attacking talent has joined the club. It is now up to Steve Clarke to get the most from all the talent at his disposal. Reading fans should have an exciting season in store.
