Review of the Day
Accies Clinch Double Signing
Scottish side Hamilton Academicals have signed a couple of free agents. Defender Kenny van der Weg had been a Ross County player until leaving during the January transfer window, while midfielder Ross Jenkins last played for Viking Stavanger, leaving them in November when their season ended.
Conte Says He Needs To Be More Persuasive To Get Players
Antonio Conte has admitted to being 'a bit of a disaster' when it comes to persuading the Chelsea board to sign the players he wants. "I have to speak more with the managers who are very, very good at persuading their clubs to spend money to buy top players," he said. "I think I'm a bit of a disaster to convince the club to buy players. I think in this aspect I can improve a lot. I have to learn a lot from the other coaches, the other managers, in that aspect."
Sane Back For City
Despite being initially ruled out until the middle of March, following an injury received in the FA Cup win over Cardiff City, Leroy Sane has returned to fitness already. "He's not in perfect condition but he is with us. The physios did a good job," Guardiola said. "He wants to help us. I'm surprised. He has worked a lot, but I didn't expect with a young guy how professional he was." They are also boosted by the return of David Silva and Fabian Delph to contention, though they have doubts over the fitness of new signing Aymeric Laporte.
Alderweireld Left Out Of Travelling Spurs Sqaud
Tottenham Hotspur have left defender Toby Alderweireld behind as they travel to Turin to face Juventus. "He had a massive injury and from day one we designed a plan to provide him with the best tools to recover as soon as possible and to be stronger than before," said manager Mauricio Pochettino. "He has started to work with the team and it's our judgement that he needs to build his fitness." I doubt those words will do anything to stop the rumours that the impasse on a new contract is the reason for him being left behind though.
Corporate Partnerships In Football Are Getting Worse
We have had Man Utd branded tractors but now Bayern Munich have teamed up with a new corporate partner, sorry new 'official hotel partner', Courtyard by Marriott, to offer an even more ludicrous idea. They are installing a new executive box at the Allianz Arena, which sounds fine, until you realise that internally it will be furnished like a hotel suite, with bed. It is not a hotel room that you can stay in, just an executive box with a bed in it. All seems a bit pointless and like they are trying too hard to me.
Mahrez Welcomed Back After January Mistake
Claude Puel has welcomed Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez back into the Leicester City fold after he once again tried to force a move away from the club. "Sometimes some players can make a mistake," said Puel. "It was the first time for him and it was a mistake but the most important thing is to look forward and put it right. He is fantastic player for us, his team-mates and the fans. It is a pleasure to watch him. It is important we continue together." Puel's words suggest he was not referring to the transfer request or attempt to force a move, but instead he seems to be talking about the absence from training. Does that contradict Mahrez's claims that the club knew where he was?
Kallstrom Flown To Korea To Cover Arsenal Game In Sweden
Eurosport have flown their Match day pundit to Korea, from Sweden, to cover Arsenal's Europa League match against Ostersunds. In Sweden. With Eurosport having exclusive rights to Winter Olympics coverage in Sweden, most of their staff are out in South Korea. It was easier to fly former Arsenal midfielder Kim Kallstrom to join the crew out there for the studio punditry than bring back a crew for the coverage. "We have a lot of people on site, but we were missing a football expert in our gang, so we're very glad that Kim is doing this," Discovery's head of sport Emir Osmanbergovic said.
