Review of the Day
Transfers
Sunderland's former Manchester United and Everton midfielder, Darron Gibson, has been released by the Black Cats after being charged with drink driving. A Sunderland statement read: "Following the conclusion of his recent suspension, Darron Gibson will leave Sunderland AFC by mutual consent."
MLS side Minnesota United have moved to bolster their squad with 30 year old winger Darwin Quintero, who has left Mexico's Liga MX team CF America to move to America.
SFA Agree Deal To Buy Hampden Park
Scottish League One club Queen's Park have agreed to sell their ground, Hampden Park, to the Scottish Football Association. Hampden is the venue for cup finals and the Scottish national teams home matches, but the SFA would have changed to Murrayfield if they were unable to buy Hampden.
Tuchel Signed For Another Club Say Bayern
Bayern Munich's hunt for a Carlo Ancelotti replacement is ongoing, but the Bavarians have confirmed that Thomas Tuchel is not the replacement as he has already agreed to manage someone else. CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has announced that the man who will take over from caretaker Jupp Heynckes will be revealed by the end of April. Rummenigge said: "I'm working on the basis that we'll present our new coach by the end of April at the latest. But there's no rush, we're quite relaxed. We've already hired coaches just a few days before the start of training. The credential is: we want a German-speaking coach. And that's how it'll be. Our sporting director, Hasan Salihamidzic, has held talks with coaches - that's his job - and among them was Tuchel. Last Friday, Thomas Tuchel told us that he's signed with another club. One has to accept that, but it's not a problem for us."
And Finally....
While these days we have Paul Pogba's haircuts and Jose Mourinho's refusal to discuss him as the news headlines, in times past there were real characters such as Bill Shankly. Shanks was asked after a game against Southampton what he thought about their young winger Mick Channon by a reporter from the Southampton Evening Echo (does that still exist?). Shankly politely replied that he thought Channon was a very good winger. "Would you say he's as good a player as Stan Matthews?" the reporter asked. "Oh, aye," Shankly replied. "As a player he's definitely on par with Stan Matthews." The reporter thanked Shanks for his time and turned away, scribbling the quote into his notebook. Suddenly, Shanks reached out and caught the young man by the arm. "This Channon is as good a player as Stan Matthews," he said, "but what you have to remember is that Stan is sixty-five now." They don't make 'em like they used to!
