Review of the Day

Transfers

Nigel de Jong has been released by 1.FSV Mainz 05, perhaps now he can take up that career in tae kwon do he has been preparing for since the 2010 World Cup.

RB Leipzig have splashed out £13.5m for teenage Brazilian striker Matheus Cunha from FC Sion of the Swiss Super League.

Sweden Winger Subjected To Racial Abuse After Late Mistake

Sweden winger Jimmy Durmaz has been subjected to racial abuse following his late foul which saw Germany score the winner against the Swedes. The 29 year old was born in Sweden to parents who had emigrated from Turkey. The Swedish FA have reported the threats he has received to the police. The whole squad stood behind him in footage filmed by the Swedish FA as he read out a statement: "When you threaten me, when you can call me a terrorist, then you have gone far beyond the border. And even worse, when you threaten my family, my children - who does such a thing? It is completely unacceptable. I am proud to play in the Swedish national team and I will never let any racists destroy that pride. We must all avoid all forms of racism. At the same time, I would like to thank all those who supported and showed their love. Continue to support Sweden. We need you."

Sporting Fans Vote Out President

Sporting CP president Bruno de Carvalho has hit out at a ballot he described as "one of the greatest frauds ever seen" following the result revealing 71% of the club's paying membership had voted for him to leave. Considering what has happened under his leadership, including 9 players quitting the club following an attack on them by fans, I think he has a point. The real figure would almost certainly have been much higher. De Carvalho was already suspended by a club committee, but he had refused to stand down. He has now written on social media that he would "quit the club forever".

Serbian FA Head Under FIFA Investigation

Serbian FC head Slavisa Kokeza and Serbia head coach Mladen Krstajic are both under investigation following comments the pair made in the aftermath of the defeat to Switzerland. Kokeza had called the defeat a "brutal robbery" and claimed that FIFA had directed officials to give decisions against them, due to a German referee officiating the game. That game has also seen a third Swiss played investigated over a goal celebration, as new Arsenal signing and Switzerland captain Stephan Lichsteiner has joined his team-mates Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka. Though it is interesting that Serbian full-back Alexander Kolarov has not been investigated over his goal celebration in the tournament, which was a symbol associated with a far right wing group that were involved in the ethnic cleansing operations.

In other disciplinary proceedings Denmark have been fined 20,000 Swiss francs for crowd disturbances, a sexist banner displayed by the fans and not respecting pre-match protocol. I have no idea what that last bit could even mean! German officials Ulrich Voigt and Georg Behlau are also being investigated after footage showed them run straight over to the Denmark bench to taunt them after Toni Kroos scored a last gasp winner.

So Who Is The GOAT?

As it is a slow news day I thought I would stick my oar in the GOAT debate. So which is the greatest of all time? Is it Lionel Messi, superstar with Barcelona but struggling to make any real impact in international football or is it Cristian Ronaldo, who has dragged both Real Madrid and Portugal to tournament wins and is starring in the current world cup in Russia? Personally I think the answer is obvious, with his record of almost singlehandedly dragging his teams to trophy wins way beyond expectations, the GOAT has to be, Maradona.
