Review of the Day
United Speak To Neilson
Former Hearts head coach Robbie Neilson has been speaking to Dundee United regarding their open manager's position. Csaba Laszlo left Tannadice after a 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Ross County, after managing the club for just 44 games. Neilson is a former player at United, having a short spell with the club in 2011/12.
Wales Have Bale Injury Fears
Wales forward Gareth Bale was taken off in the 80th minute of Real Madrid's defeat at the hands of Alaves with an injury. Real boss Julen Lopetegui said: "Gareth had [an injury], so we had to make decisions regarding changes." Bale has joined up with the Wales squad to be assessed ahead of the friendly against Spain.
Rodgers Rules Himself Out Of Villa Job Contention, Sort Of
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers ruled himself out of contention for the vacant Aston Villa manager's job. After Celtic thrashed a team with a tiny percentage of their budget in St Johnstone, Rodgers said: "I'm the Celtic manager and I love it and have lots of challenges here. There is always speculation. Villa is a top Premier League club in the Championship and I'm sure with their support base and resources they will try and get back there as quickly as they can." However he later said at his press conference that "you can't rule me out because I have never been asked".
Dunk Gets England Call-Up
After Burnley defender James Tarkowski picked up a groin injury (was that caused by stamp er I mean accidentally standing on Huddersfield Town striker Laurent Depoitres?) at the weekend in their draw with Huddersfield, Lewis Dunk has been called up to replace him in the England squad.
Terry Retires
Former England captain John Terry has retired from playing after leaving Aston Villa in the summer. The 37 year old turned down a deal with Spartak Moscow, amongst other offers, and has decided to move on to the next step of his career. Terry's glittering career was mainly spent with Chelsea, but was often tainted with controversy, none of which will stop him going down as a Chelsea legend.
Pique Hits Back At Critics
As Gerard Pique's performances wane and more mistakes litter his games, he is finding himself facing criticism, criticism he is not happy to take. Pique said: "I know that there are many people who are hoping that things don't go well for me. They can enjoy it, they should come out of their caves and enjoy the sun. There are many people waiting for me and want to go for me. When we concede a goal it's my fault, there are people who are waiting for me, but not only in Madrid. The TV can take advantage, come out of the cave, because this is going to change."
Ozil Ruled Out With Back Spasm
Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil was left out of the Arsenal squad on Sunday due to a back spasm on Saturday, manager Unai Emery revealed. The German missed out on Arsenal's biggest win of the campaign after starting 6 of the last 7 Arsenal games. Emery said after the game: "Yesterday he came in with pain and he cannot train yesterday or play today."
Agent Dismisses Zidane Rumours
The agent for former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has dismissed talk of him taking over at Manchester United by revealing the France legend has no interest in managing in England. Alain Migliaccio said: "I do not think that he will coach in England. It is not his style. I have discussed it with him. It is truthfully not appealing."
Another Former Premier League Team's Captain Retires At Age 37
While not as big a name to most as John Terry, to Brighton & Hove Albion fans Gordon Greer is arguably their greatest ever captain, in a similar way to Terry with Chelsea fans. The 37 year old has also announced his retirement after leaving a club in the summer, with Greer released by Kilmarnock. Greer was a ball playing Scottish international centre back, once described by then-Scotland manager Gordon Strachan as a "rock star defender", who captained the Seagulls 234 times.
