Review of the Day
Hazard Very Happy At Chelsea
Despite spending the last few years constantly talking up a move to Real Madrid, Chelsea star Eden Hazard has said he is very happy to finish his career with the London club. The 27 year old spends every international break and summer discussing his love for Madrid and how it would be a dream to go there. The latest pronouncement was about his 'quandary' about whether to sign a new contract with Chelsea or to push for a move to Madrid, despite knowing full well if they really want him they would be willing to pay the money it costs. However the Belgian, who has been in magnificent form this season, has now said: "I can finish with Chelsea. No problem at all. I am very happy with this club, with the team, my family is happy here. So If I don't go to Spain, it is not a problem. I love the fans - I think the fans love me. What happens in the future, I will be happy, so that's it."
Martin Moves To Walsall
League One side Walsall have signed free agent defender Russell Martin until the end of the season. The 32 year old Scot had been on trial with West Bromwich Albion, following his release by Norwich City after 9 years with the club, but failed to win a move there. He has now moved into a player/coach role with the Saddlers.
Portugese midfielder Miguel Veloso has returned to Genoa. The former international left Genoa in the summer after 2 seasons with the Italian club and has now re-signed with them.
Warnock Continues Optimistic Comments Regarding Cardiff
Not content with saying he expects Cardiff City to struggle, manager Neil Warnock has continued to talk up their chances of survival by telling the fans not to put money on them. While he did also say he would not have said to put money on them getting promotion last season, his constant negativity in quotes can not be helping their chances. Surely the manager's job is not to state the obvious, but to make them go out and prove the obvious is not always true? Warnock said, when asked if he would put money on Cardiff surviving: "No I wouldn't - not if I was a betting man. I would put other people's money on it. But I would not have put a penny on us last year getting promotion. I would have said keep your money in your pocket. Don't be stupid. Some people won quite a lot of money, though. Some people might win an awful lot of money this year. We know where we are. The lads have to decide, do we want to stay in the Premier League as a player or as a manager or a club. We have an opportunity even though it looks bleak at the minute - we are 1/4 now (with the bookmakers). So they have already thrown us away to the wolves. We have three out of four home games this month, which are vital. We have to get points in those games to get us up that table and put us back in the pack, because there are quite a lot of teams struggling this season. We've had opportunities to get a lot more points that we have. But we have to grasp that opportunity now. We can't keep saying the same story. Three out of four home games against nobody in the top six gives us an opportunity to get some points. But the teams we are playing against will be saying the same about us."
Airdrie Appoints Murray
Former Hibernian and Rangers defender Ian Murray is set to take charge at Airdrieonians on Monday. The 37 year old has previously managed at Dumbarton and St Mirren before working as an assistant in Norway. Murray said: "We will aim for continued improvement. After speaking to the board, it was clear that we share the same views on many aspects of the game, and we hope to implement a number of these ideas over time. In a very tight league we feel we have a group of players who can compete at the top end. The facilities and infrastructure at the club give us a great platform for improvement, which will become evident over the coming months. With my experiences of working outwith Scotland for the last two years, I have fresh ideas to bring to the club, and this is a great chance for those ideas to come to fruition."
UEFA Fine Manchester United
Manchester United have been fined 15,000 euros for a late kick off in the Champions League at Old Trafford. Kick-off was delayed by 5 minutes after the team bus got stuck in traffic on the way to the ground to face Valencia. Napoli have also picked up a fine, having been fined 34,000 euros for setting off fireworks and blocking stairways in their home match against Liverpool.
Bayern Hit Out At Media
Bayern Munich have held a bizarre press conference to hit out at press coverage of their struggles at the beginning of the season. Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge threatened to take legal action if the media criticism continued as the Bavarians sit in 6th in the Bundesliga, having failed to pick up a win in their last 4 matches, including a loss to rivals and league leaders Borussia Dortmund just before the international break. Rummenigge said: "We met on Monday after Germany's international match against the Netherlands and have decided we will no longer accept this style of journalism. What we have had to read in recent times has nothing to do with performance, it was a settlement with individual players. Today we will protect our players, our coaches and also the club. Today is an important day as we inform you that we will no longer tolerate this derogatory and derisive reporting. I have no words for what I have read about Manuel Neuer. I would like to remind you that Manuel was world goalkeeper of the year four times. And if I have to read that our central defenders Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng play 'old men football', I think: 'Come on, guys, I want to remind you of Article 1 of the Constitution - the dignity of a person is unassailable'."
