Review of the Day
Ranieri Takes Over At Fulham
Seeing as I forgot to include this story yesterday, I thought I had better put it in today! Fulham, despite all the statements from their chairman and owner Shahid Khan telling us that Slavisa Jokanovic is safe, have sacked Jokanovic and replaced him with Claudio Ranieri. Khan's statement on this read: "I wasn't anticipating having to make this announcement related to Slavisa and wish the circumstances were such that I didn't have to, but our path this season has led me to make what I know is the correct decision, at the right time, for our players, the club and our supporters. Making a change without having the right answer or succession plan was not an option. So having someone of Claudio's calibre ready to accept our challenge was comforting but, most of all, essential. Claudio is risk-free and ready-made for the Premier League, and particularly so for what we need at this moment at Fulham. His recent body of work with Leicester City is literally legendary, and then you look at Claudio's experience with Chelsea and big clubs throughout Europe, and it's pretty evident we are welcoming an extraordinary football man to Fulham Football Club."
Chairboys Sign Loan Player
QPR goalkeeper Matt Ingram has moved to Wycombe Wanderers on a 7 day emergency loan. Wycombe have lost Ryan Allsop and Yves Ma-Kalambay to injury.
Roma Set To Donate To Sean Cox
Sean Cox, the Liverpool fan who was left with a severe brain injury after being attacked by AS Roma fans ahead of the first leg of the Champions League semi-final between Liverpool and Roma, will require care for the rest of his life. Roma have stepped up to help by donating 100,000 euros, while their chairman Jim Pallotta is making a personal donation of 50,000 euros. Pallotta said: "What happened to Sean Cox should never happen to anyone attending a football match. Our thoughts today, as they have been from day one, are with Sean, Martina and their whole family. We all hope Sean makes as full a recovery as possible."
Prem To Shut Transfer Window Early Again
Turkeys once again vote for Christmas (or Thanksgiving if you are in the USA), as they choose to close the summer transfer window early again this year, despite it being a resounding failure last time around. With all the managers complaining that they were unable to get their squads sorted before the window shut, you would think they would scrap the idea, especially as it gave clubs in other leagues the chance to unsettle their players and gain a competitive edge in European competition, but they probably needed to shut early to save the money for Richard Scudamore's obscene pay off. All the problems with the window were caused by creating it in the first place, I have no idea why they think making it shorter, and so more frantic, helps fix those problems.
Strinic Given All Clear Heart All-Clear
AC Milan's Croatian defender Ivan Strinic has been given the all clear to return to training after missing 3 months with a heart problem, just after signing for the Serie A club. The 31 year old has been diagnosed with a condition called 'athlete's heart' which is not considered a dangerous condition.
Prem To Introduce VAR
Video Assistant Referees are to be introduced into the Premier League next season after the clubs agreed to its introduction, despite voting against it in April. The Premier League has been running trials throughout the season and will continue the trials for the rest of the season.
Football Leaks Hit Chelsea With More Allegations
With Chelsea facing a youth signing ban, potentially, from FIFA, they are now being accused of illegal payments to young Danish defender Andreas Christensen's father. According to Football Leaks, Sten Christensen was hired as a scout on the same day as Andreas was signed at the age of 15. Chelsea reportedly paid Sten £656,640 over 4 years, while he was still employed by Brondby as a goalkeeper coach and there is no evidence he did any scouting during those 4 years. Liverpool and Everton have already been fined and banned from signing under-18 players over the past couple of years.
Rangers Make Official Complaint About Referee
After referee Willie Collum admitted giving Rangers winger Daniel Candeias a second yellow card, and a subsequent red, for blowing kisses at St Mirren 'defender' Anton Ferdinand, Rangers have submitted a formal complaint to the Scottish FA. A spokesperson for the club said: "I can confirm we have sent a formal letter of complaint about the referee's performance in that match. We have nothing else to say at this time." Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has called the decision to send off his player as 'embarrassing'.
Dembele Sued Over Unpaid Rent In Germany
Barcelona spent over 100million euros on signing Ousmane Dembele from Borussia Dortmund after the French youngster became a serious problem to the German club in order to force a move to the Catalan club. Now he has become embroiled in fresh controversy to add to his ongoing problems with Barca, where he has been out of the side, and regularly late or skipping training altogether on a whim. On top of that he is now being sued for 20,000 euros of unpaid rent and for leaving his apartment in a real mess when he left. Dembele's former landlord is claiming 15,000 euros in unpaid rent and 5,000 euros to repair the damage he did to the place. It is alleged Dembele damaged the floors and left rubbish and clothes throughout the flat, according to pictures from Bild. Also he failed to return the keys, leading to the landlord needing to change the locks when he left. A spokesperson for the Dortmund local court said: "Mr Dembele is charged by his former landlord to pay €15,000 rent plus €5.000 compensation. That is the cost to repair some damages: Broken shutters, damaged floors, for example. The garbage which is mentioned in the report [from Bild] is explicitly not part of this proceeding. The receiver now has two to three weeks to respond to these claims, if he doesn't there will be a default judgement." Interestingly, some sources in Germany also claim his landlord was Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who has often been linked with wanting to sign him. Dembele has recently found his conduct criticised by both his national manager Didier Deschamps and a number of former Barcelona stars, including club legend Carles Puyol.
Lovren Taunts Ramos After Croatia Victory Over Spain
Liverpool's Croatian international centre-back Dejan Lovren has taunted Real Madrid's Spanish defender Sergio Ramos after Croatia beat Spain 3-2 in the Nations League. Lovren, on a live video broadcast on social media from the dressing room straight after the game, insulted Ramos, as well as claiming he got him with an elbow, in a move that will go down well with Liverpool fans and Egyptians. Lovren, who is famously (amongst Liverpool fans and Egyptians anyway) enjoying a bromance with Mohamed Salah at the moment, has been involved in a war of words with Ramos since the Spaniard injured Salah in the Champions League final last season. Lovren said on the live broadcast: "Elbowed him good," while making an elbow motion with his arm, "haha! 3-2! Go ahead and talk now buddy. Buddy! They are a bunch of pussies." I am betting the first two thumbs up on the post will have been from Lorus Karius and Milan Havel....
