The Beast Retires

37 year old former Preston North End striker Jon Parkin has announced his retirement from the game. A throwback player, with all the subtlety of a brick through the window and fitness regime of a normal fan, Parkin was a brutal 17 stone battering ram of a forward whose biggest achievement was being part of the Stoke City squad that won promotion to the Premier League in 2008, though he never got to play in the top flight.

Trotters Take Just Three Players

Bolton Wanderers have taken just three senior outfield players to their League One opening match with Wycombe Wanderers. The Trotters have been in administration since May and are still awaiting the completion of their takeover by Football Ventures.

Baxter said: "I feel it's time for someone else to take over and I have decided to resign from my position. It is my personal decision. Going to Afcon, this squad had not lost in a year, something that was not easy considering we were introducing new players. I've chosen not to point fingers and I will refrain from that. Choosing not to answer some misleading media coverage is something that's also hard to do." He is the ninth head coach to leave his job after the tournament.

Bury Second Game Postponed

Bury's second league game of the season has been suspended by the EFL as they say the club can still not demonstrate financial viability. An EFL statement read: "Following a lengthy discussion, the board agreed that progress had been made with regard to the outstanding evidence requested by the league. United Agree Slabhead Fee

Leicester City defender Harry Maguire is closing in on a world record move to Manchester United. The centre back will cost a world record fee for a defender, if he does complete a move. Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers said: "The clubs have agreed [a fee] and there's still some work for it to go through. There's still a bit to go in terms of Harry's medical and whatever personal things to sort out, but it is what it is. He's a special player, he's not a player that of course we would want to lose. He's a top-class player, he's a good man as well, and everything about Harry over the course of this pre-season, he knows there has been interest over the summer and he's been super professional."
