Rafa Bites Back At Charnley

After Newcastle United chief executive Lee Charnley claimed that Rafael Benitez left the Toon and went to China for the money, Rafa has responded and accused the Newcastle board of being untrustworthy. Charnley wrote in his column in the matchday programme: "We understand and expected the disappointment that Rafa's departure caused. We strongly believed we went beyond what we could reasonably be asked in order to keep him. But let's be clear, he moved to China for money." However Rafa disputes Charnley's version of events and wrote in a column for The Athletic: "I tried to do my best every day, even staying when we went down to the Championship and saying no to other offers - bigger offers than the one I recently accepted with Dalian Yifang, by the way. If I was only interested in moving 'for money', as Charnley stated, I could have done it much earlier. Newcastle's board had a year to sort out my contract but, when we met after the end of last season, they didn't make me a proper offer. They told me they didn't want to invest in the academy or the training ground - if they like, I can explain the reason why Mike Ashley refused to do that. After that meeting, I knew they would not come back with a serious offer and, when it arrived, 19 days later, it was for the same salary as three years earlier and with less control over signings. After three years of unfulfilled promises, I didn't trust them." Personally I think he should explain why.

Grecians Defender Banned

Exeter City defender Tom Parkes has been suspended for 3 matches after an incident which was missed by match officials on the day but caught on video in Exeter's 1-0 win over Stevenage on Saturday. Parkes was found guilty of violent conduct for a clash with Stevenage defender Chris Stokes towards the end of the game.

Shakers Have 4th Game Suspended

Bury will have to wait even longer to start their season after a 4th match was suspended by the English Football League. The Shakers were due to face Gillingham on Saturday but were once more unable to provide the evidence requested by the EFL of their financial viability. An EFL statement read: "Clarity is still required on plans to meet the club's commitments to football creditors, payment to unsecured creditors as part of the company voluntary arrangement (CVA), alongside source and sufficiency of funding for season 2019-20."

Ref Banned For Accepting Bribe

The Liberian FA have been referee Josephus Torjilar for 2 years after he admitted receiving a bribe. Torjilar admitted receiving $100 after a second-tier relegation play-off match between Pags and Srimex FC.

City Avoid Ban

Manchester City have been fined but avoided a transfer ban after admitting breaching FIFA rules on signing youth players. The richest club in the world were fined, for them, a miniscule £315,000. They admitted breaking the rules only after two players they had signed told a Danish newspaper that they had signed for City and played in youth matches before they turned 18. City have also been in trouble for similar offences with the Premier League and were banned from signing academy players for 2 years and fined £300,000 in May 2017.
