Nottingham Forest v Hull City Review
Another game in a similar vein to the previous one at Wigan where nothing really seemed to click for us albeit a more entertaining affair than that one the result was the same.
Credit to Hull whose wing play was for most of the game excellent with Cash in particular being given a real grilling on the right side and looked a constant threat to us and it was no surprise that both goals came from the wings.
Samba continues on his merry way and reinforced his quality at this level with several important saves and an urgency to get thing moving and Cash, though tormented at times defensively, showed energy and commitment sadly lacking in others and rightly deserved his man of the match accolade and for me he looked the player most likely to score and add to his tally.
Unfortunately those two were really about the only ones to emerge from last night with any real credit as we looked lacklustre and a little bereft of ideas against a strong and physical Hull side who I must admit surprised me with some of their football.
As so many have said I do not think that Silva and Carvalho are suited in this league to playing together as they look lightweight and whilst Silva struggled manfully to get into the game Carvalho endured a rather miserable evening in for my money the type of game, at home, where he should really be stamping his authority on it and he continues to frustrate having made well over 40 appearances for us.
Robinson had a less than impressive slightly ill disciplined night again and Watson looks a different player when not alongside Sow and the same can perhaps also be said about Worrall and Dawson though to be fair Worrall has made great strides from the player of a couple of seasons ago .
Ameobis control and final ball where not what they should but he was unlucky not to be awarded a penalty following a challenge from Lichaj but I am not sure that his habit of going to ground in a theatrical heap Ben Brereton fashion helps his case.
As for Joe Lolley it may be time for what may at one time have been unthinkable ie a spell out of the firing line either on the bench or even a brief spell in the reserves to find his confidence because you do not become a bad player overnight and we badly need him to be, at the moment, even half the player he was last year.
The introduction of Adomah turned out to be a bit of a damp squib and in truth he was almost anonymous but one bright (ish) point was to see Yates back on the pitch from injury and it remains to be seen if he can somehow fill the void left by the absence of Sow and Semedo but they are big boots to fill.
Bearing in mind that for pretty well the last 25 minutes of the game it was played almost exclusively around the oppositions box with 10 man Hull frantically defending it is a damning statistic that we only manged two efforts on target for the whole game which is indicative to me of a lack of composure and decision making in front of goal.
At least we have the opportunity to get back out on the pitch quickly against Reading and team selection will certainly be an interesting one and 3 points will be important, though for me not at this stage essential, if only to restore flagging confidence.
I still maintain that this is a league in which we have an excellent chance of at least making the play offs but as with all teams there will be bumps in the road but I believe Mr Lamouchi at the moment is willing to admit and accept his failings and errors and will put them right in due course to steady the ship following two setbacks.
So see you all on Saturday and
As always
COYR.
