Shrimpers Chairman Pays Wages
Southend United's chairman Ron Martin has paid the shortfall in wages personally. A number of senior players were not paid on time in December, so Martin paid the shortfall of £140,000 out of his pocket. Martin said: "I accept the buck stops with me. They should have been paid on time and they were not. I was texted by (centre-back) Jason Demetriou last night to ask if I would stop by the training ground today and speak to all the players. I'm pleased to say the meeting went well. I've assured them that it won't happen again. It's ultimately my responsibility. If the club doesn't meet budgets as a result of poor performances and income not meeting what's anticipated, then it's for me to meet that shortfall."
Rovers Boss Given Leave
Bristol Rovers manager Ben Garner has been given an extended period of leave to deal with a private matter regarding the health of a close family member. First-team coach Kevin Maher will be in charge on Tuesday when Rovers face Coventry City in an FA Cup 3rd round replay.
Explicit Video Leads To Sacking
Four days after suspending head coach Victor Sanchez, due to the publication of an explicit video of him on social media, Malaga have sacked the 43 year old. A club statement revealed that he was fired for "disciplinary reasons" and that "Malaga took this decision in consideration of the serious harm the recent non-sporting events have done to the club." Sanchez claims he was being blackmailed over the video prior to its publication.
Aguero Becomes Highest Scoring Foreigner
Sergio Aguero scored a 12th hat-trick of his Premier League career to become the league's top scoring foreigner, moving level and then past Thierry Henry as Manchester City smash a hapless Aston Villa side 6-1. Aguero now has 177 goals, the same number as Frank Lampard, with just Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney and Andy Cole ahead in the all-time list. He also set a record for hat-tricks scored.
