Transfers

Jaco makes his second transfer of 2020, joining Canadian Premier League side York9 FC from Ipora on a free. Jaco only joined Ipora in January from Goias.

Former Manchester United youth academy player Will Vint has signed for Colorado Rapids from Atlanta United in exchange for a 4th round pick at the 2022 MLS SuperDraft.

Atletico Ottawa have made history by completing their first ever signing. The newly created CPL side owned by Atletico Madrid have signed 27 year old winger Ben Fisk from Pacific FC.

Aaron Niguez, the brother of Atleti midfielder Saul, has signed for Malaga on a free transfer.

Tottenham Hotspur's Kenyan midfielder Victor Wanyama has signed for Major League Soccer's Montreal Impact on a free transfer.

Injury Round-Up

Cenk Tosun has returned to Everton to have tests on the knee injury he picked up training with loan club Crystal Palace. It is feared the injury will not just put paid to his season, but also rule the Turkish international striker out of Euro 2020.

Tottenham Hotspur's England striker Harry Kane has insisted he will be fit to lead the line for his country in Euro 2020. Kane has been out of action since New Year's Day, when he ruptured a tendon in his left hamstring.

Managerial Changes

Ivory Coast have appointed Patrice Beaumelle as their new head coach. The 41 year old Frenchman replaces Ibrahim Kamara, who left the job last month. Beaumelle was previously an assistant to Herve Renard as Ivory Coast won the 2015 Afcon.

Disciplinary Charges

Shrewsbury Town have been fined £4,000 and Doncaster Rovers £2,500 for failing to control their players during a last-minute incident in their match, which Shrewsbury won 1-0.

Ghana's former FA president Kwesi Nyantakyi has been charged with fraud. Nyantakyi was filmed taking $65,000 from a reporter in an undercover operation in 2018. He also stands accused of requesting $12m to influence the award of contracts from a potential sponsor.

Bournemouth's goalkeeping coach Neil Moss was fined £1,500 after admitting an improper conduct charge.

Jorge Mendes' Home Searched In Money Laundering Probe

The Portugese attorney's office have confirmed that super agent Jorge Mendes' home was amongst 76 searches conducted by tax and police inspectors as they investigate tax evasion and money laundering. As well as Mendes, who is Cristiano Ronaldo's agent, the offices of Porto, Benfica, Sporting CP, Braga, Guimaraes, Maritimo, Estoril and Portimonense were also searched. An attorney office statement read: "As part of an investigation conducted by the Public Ministry of the Central Department of Investigation and Penal Action (DCIAP) and whose investigation is in charge of the Tax and Customs Authority (AT), 76 searches are underway, including house searches, namely, in several football clubs, their societies and managers, law firms and intermediaries. The investigation is likely to be part of the practice of crimes of qualified tax fraud and money laundering."

Italy Bans Fans

All sporting events in Italy, including Serie A matches, will be played behind closed doors for the next month, at least, due to the coronavirus outbreak. The ban on fans is initially set to run until 3rd April, while schools and universities have been closed until 15th March. Serie A is set to play the six games that were postponed this weekend.

Bassini Wants Oldham

Laurence Bassini has revealed he is keen on buying League Two side Oldham Athletic. Bassini failed to buy Bolton Wanderers last year and has now turned his attention to financially trouble Oldham. The Latics are on the verge of going into administration due to debts owed to former owner Simon Blitz. It is also facing a winding up order in court on 18th March, as HMRC chase unpaid taxes. Bassini was banned from involvement in football for 3 years back in 2013 due to financial misconduct while he was owner of Watford.

Campbell Looking To Keep Morale Up

Southend United manager Sol Campbell has told the BBC that he is looking to try and keep the morale of his players up, despite the club's financial troubles which have seen salaries go unpaid in February and a transfer embargo placed on the club. Campbell said: "I understand the situation and I'm trying to counteract that and hopefully they (the players) can forget about what's happening. When they come off the field, they're going to think about it, but I'm trying to do my best to keep the morale up. That's all I can do. I can't control anything above me. I just want to give the lads a nice football environment to work in. That's the only thing I'm looking at - the football and that's it. That's the only thing that's keeping me going - the games, the training with the lads. I'm not looking at anything else and what else is happening outside the club or above me."

Tykes Want To Keep Struber

Barnsley are intent on keeping Gerhard Struber in charge, even if they are relegated from the Championship at the end of the season. Struber joined the Tykes from Austrian side Wolfsberger AC in November, with the club marooned at the bottom of the league table. Since then he has brought them into contention to survive with seven wins in twenty league matches. Barnsley chief executive Dane Murphy said: "It is clear since Gerhard has come in there has been a shift. It is very much in a positive direction. He's had a positive change on the ecosystem and environment. We have him on a multi-year contract as well so we expect him, regardless - if we are in Championship or League One - to stay with the club."

Bluebirds Reduce Losses

Cardiff City's losses dropped to £755,000 in the year ending May 2019, following a £34m loss in the previous accounting year. The Bluebirds finances were helped by spending that season in the Premier League, which saw their turnover rise to £125m from £35m the year before. However, on the minus side, their wage bill rose by £11.3m to £42.5m due to being in the top flight. Around £32m was repaid to owner Vincent Tan, reducing the debt to him to £40m. Overall debt, including that owed to Tan, is £114m, as the debt to Tan has been replaced by loans of £39.5m to other, unnamed, parties.

Villa Reveal Big Losses

Aston Villa's promotion success came at a huge cost as the club's accounts reveal a pre-tax loss of £68.9m in the year ending 31st May 2019. It is nearly double the previous year's loss of £36.1m, as the wage bill went up to £95m from £73.1m. £30m was in the form of a payment to former owner Randy Lerner, due to the promotion win.

Foster Mr Nice Guy

Watford's veteran keeper Ben Foster has once again shown what a good guy he is. A few weeks ago he was rescuing a dementia sufferer who got lost on his way home from a match, now he is keeping promises to a youngster suffering from leukemia. Foster was a surprise visitor, on behalf of Watford, to 12 year old leukemia sufferer Molly Hall and promised to sort it out so that she could be the mascot for the game of her choice. The 12 year old chose well, choosing the weekend's 3-0 win over runaway league leaders Liverpool and Foster kept his promise. Molly told the BBC: "He's my best friend. He was so kind, caring and he was just really nice. There's not anything bad you could say about him." Though she did stop short of calling him her favourite player, saying: "Well, Ben's my favourite player as well as Gomes, Deeney and Deulofeu...but Ben could be there at the top." You do wonder what Foster has to do to be her outright favourite!
