Review of the Day

Contracts

Millwall duo Ryan Leonard and Tom Bradshaw have both extended their contract by a year.

Werder Bremen's sporting director Frank Baumann has extended his contract with the club. It was set to expire in the summer, though no details have yet been provided on the length of his new deal.

Transfers

Wigan Athletic have released striker Joe Garner by mutual consent, after the 32 year old asked to leave the struggling club.

Villareal have paid an undisclosed fee for French midfielder Etienne Capoue from Watford.

Canadian Premier League side Cavalry FC have signed former Argentina youth striker Matias Roskopf. Roskopf was a free agent after the pandemic saw his contract with Apollon Limassol in Cyprus mutually terminated.

Injury Round-Up

Celtic defender Christopher Jullien has suffered a knee injury colliding with a post during their win over Dundee United.

Barcelona's former Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho has suffered a knee injury. The 28 year old Brazilian has injured the lateral meniscus of his left knee, which will require arthroscopic surgery to repair.

Managerial Changes

Following Burton Albion's 4-3 home defeat to Wigan Athletic, manager Jake Buxton is to leave the club.

Paul Hurst is to return as boss of Grimsby Town as a replacement for Ian Holloway. Hurst spent over 5 years in charge between 2011 and 2016.

Games Off

The Scottish Premiership match between Livingston and Aberdeen has been postponed due to a frozen pitch, even though it is an artificial playing surface. Manchester City have reopened their training ground after Monday's game at Everton was called off. Their game with Chelsea is still in doubt but should be able to go ahead as planned. Fulham's game at Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night was called off 3 hours ahead of kick-off due to new CV cases at Fulham.

Lovren Offers Accommodation To Earthquake Victims

Former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has offered free stays in his hotel for families who have been effected by an earthquake in Croatia. The Zenit St Petersburg player wrote on social media: "Dear citizens of Petrinja, I am making my hotel in Novalja available to the 16 most endangered families. If you need temporary accommodation, contact my team." Chelsea's Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic has also offered help to those who have been affected.

QPR Condemn Racist Abuse Of Youngster

Young Queens Park Rangers forward Bright Osayi-Samuel has been subjected to racist abuse on social media, which he shared, calling it "disgusting and painful". QPR have condemned the "abhorrent" racist abuse. Their director of football, Les Ferdinand, said: "How can people be able to set up anonymous social media accounts? This will continue and continue until we stop it from being possible. I believe governing bodies across sport - not just football - need to come together to create a powerful voice which calls for social media platforms to change their stance."

Klasnic Wins Legal Battle Over Damage To Kidneys

Former Bolton Wanderers striker has won a legal battle for damages against another of his former clubs, Werder Bremen. Klasnic suffered serious kidney damage while playing in Germany, damage bad enough to require two transplants before joining Bolton in 2009. In 2016 his condition required a third kidney transplant after he fell seriously ill. Klasnic, who had retired in 2013, was chasing damages from Bremen due to the club's doctors prescribing high doses of painkillers which contributed to the damage to his kidneys. He had previously won damages of around £90,000 before taking the case to a higher court, which found in his favour and awarded more than £3.6m in damages to the Croatian. His lawyer, Matthias Teichner said: "No money in the world can make up for the considerable and permanent damage to my client's health [but this is] more suitable to create a feeling of justice. At least the doctors were now ready to express their regret about the incidents. In my opinion, this was long overdue." Klasnic has declined to pursue criminal charges against the two doctors, Gotz Dimanski and Manja Guha.

Burnley Takeover Completed

Sean Dyche is set to finally get some financial backing at Burnley after American firm ALK Capital completed their takeover by acquiring an 84% share of the Lancashire club. ALK's managing partner Alan Pace will replace Mike Garlick as club chairman, something which will be a relief to Dyche. Dyche and Garlick had been at loggerheads in recent months as the club allowed a number of players Dyche wished to keep in his squad to leave for free before Project Restart. Garlick will stay on the board of the club. The new chairman, who was previously CEO of MLS franchise Real Salt Lake, said: "Today marks a new era for Burnley as we become stewards of this historic club and build on the impressive work that Mike Garlick, Sean Dyche and everyone at Burnley has done to make it a financially stable, established Premier League club that is a cornerstone of the local community. With a rich heritage, a brilliant academy, and a passionate fan base, this club has solid foundations to build upon. This is the start of an exciting journey for the entire Clarets family." Pace turned RSL from a consistently bottom of the table team into the 2009 MLS Cup winners. ALK have been preparing for the takeover by also investing in two football technology firms, AiScout and Player LENS, who specialise in data analytics and predictive assessment of players. That suggests that Dyche will be given more help in recruitment, with a wider scouting net cast in search of players to improve his squad.
