Disciplinary Charges

Samson Siasia's life ban from football for "receiving bribes in relation to the manipulation of matches", has been reduced to just five years by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. A CAS statement explained that they "determined the imposition of a life ban to be disproportionate for a first offence which was committed passively and which had not had an adverse or immediate effect on football stakeholders, and that a five-year ban would still achieve the envisaged aim of punishing the infringement committed by Mr Siasia." The punishment now seems lenient when it is considered that the only reason for it being passive is that the match fixers could not afford to pay him the money he wanted: "In 2010, a match fixer tried to involve Mr Siasia as a coach of a club under his strict instructions. With the promise of employment benefits, Mr Siasia would have had to always field several players under the control of the match fixer. The negotiations between the match fixer and Mr Siasia in relation to the conditions of employment were conducted by email over a period of two months. Eventually, the club did not accept or could not afford Mr Siasia's requests and the negotiations ended."

Leeds United left-back Ezgjan Alioski is to face no action for making a cry baby gesture towards Burnley's Dwight McNeil during a Premier League match in May.

Derby County have once more fallen foul of the English Football League's rules as they continually ignore financial rules. This time they have been fined £100,000 over accounting policies, but the EFL are considering an appeal and a call for a points deduction. In order to keep their options open, the fixture list is interchangeable, allowing Wycombe Wanderers to swap places with Derby County if needed. Derby finished above Wycombe by one point. Wycombe's owner Rob Couhig has accused (with plenty of justification) Derby of "systematic cheating" and has threatened to sue the Rams if Derby escape a points deduction.

Former FIFA Council member Constant Omari has been suspended from football for a year by FIFA for breaking its ethics code. The former vice-president of CAF also has to pay back around $80,000 he received from French media company Lagardere in the form of a fine.

Away Goals Rule Scrapped

UEFA have announced that the 'away goals' rule is to be abolished in European club football from the start of the season. The rule was introduced back in 1965 and it meant that drawn two-legged ties would be awarded to the team which scored the most away goals. Games will now go straight to extra time and penalties if tied at the end of normal time.
