Injury Round-Up
Managerial Changes
Everton have sacked manager Rafael Benitez, who never managed to win the fans onside due to his former allegiance to bitter local rivals Liverpool. Benitez wrote to the fans afterwards: "We knew it wouldn't be easy. It was a big challenge, both emotionally and in terms of sport. My love for this city, for Merseyside and its people, made me accept this challenge, but it is only when you are inside that you realise the magnitude of the task. From the very first day, my staff and myself worked as we always do, with commitment and full dedication. We didn't only have to get results, but we also had to win over people's hearts. However, the financial situation and then the injuries that followed made things even harder. I am convinced that we would have been better once the injured players were back and with the arrival of the new signings. The road to success isn't easy and, sadly, nowadays in football there is a search for immediate results and there is always less and less patience; unfortunately circumstances have determined the results and it won't be possible to continue this project. In any case, thank you to the board, to the staff, to the players, and to those fans who have supported us during this time."
Genoa have sacked Ukrainian legend Andriy Shevchenko just 2 months after he took over as their head coach. The club failed to win a single Serie A game under the former Chelsea striker in nine attempts.
Disciplinary Charges
Sevilla's Copa del Rey tie against Real Betis was played over 2 days after the game was suspended on Saturday when Sevilla player Joan Jordan was hit by an object thrown from the crowd. Betis were celebrating an equaliser by Nabil Fekir when Jordan was struck. Despite Jordan not appearing to be seriously hurt, referee Ricard de Burgos abandoned the game and it was played behind closed doors the following day with Betis progressing to the quarter-finals.
Reading have stripped the club captaincy from Liam Moore following his request to leave the Championship strugglers.
An investigation has been launched after Wycombe Wanderers goalkeeper David Stockdale reported hearing homophobic comments from Oxford United's away support on Saturday.
A similar police investigation has also been launched after Cheltenham Town were "saddened" by reports of homophobic abuse during their home League One game against Charlton Athletic. Police did eject three youths from the game after it was reported that a player had received homophobic abuse and been spat at.
Pandemic Problems
Burnley have requested their home game against Watford be postponed due to injuries and CV cases. The fixture was previously postponed in December due to the pandemic having an outbreak at Watford. Burnley are already a number of games behind the rest of the Premier League due to CV-related call-offs.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been released by Gabon from their Afcon squad to return to Arsenal following the discovery of heart lesions following the forward contracting CV. Gabon have also released OGC Nice midfielder Mario Lemina due to him also suffering from heart lesions. The African nation has been hit hard by the virus, with Denis Bouanga, Noubi Fotso, David Sambissa, Serge Ngouali and Ulrick Eneme Ella ruled out of their match with Morocco due to positive tests.
Bees Make Loss
Brentford's latest accounts have confirmed that the club made a pre-tax loss of £8.5m, despite the sales of Ollie Watkins to Aston Villa and Said Benrahma to West Ham United. Without those sales the losses would have been in excess of £50m, despite the London club estimating that their pandemic-related losses are just £2.8m. The accounts also revealed that owner Matthew Benham has funded their rise from the lower leagues to the Premier League with an investment of over £100m through loans and equity.
