He also revealed that he tried to convince teammate Gianluca Scammaca not to move to Paris Saint-Germain, due to Lopez being from Marseille, PSG's bitter rivals.

Oscar Damiani, the agent for Andrei Radu, has revealed that his client is considering a loan move to Cremonese. Radu has offers from France and Germany to consider as well, but the Inter Milan keeper wants to stay in Italy according to Damiani.

Injury Round Up

Borussia Dortmund youngster Mateu Morey is set to return to action next season after 12 months on the sideline following an injury to his lateral collateral, capsular and anterior ligaments in the German Cup semi-final against Holstein Kiel in May 2021. The now 22-year-old has undergone two surgeries and months of rehabilitation but is now almost back to full fitness after returning to training last month.

Managerial Changes

Ryan Giggs has finally resigned as Wales' manager after stepping away in November 2020 following his arrest by police. Giggs was charged with using controlling behaviour and assaulting his ex-girlfriend, charges he denies, but decided to leave Wales in limbo for their qualifying campaign for the World Cup under the interim sterwardship of Robert Page. Giggs, who is due in court in August for a trial that will be finished long before the World Cup begins, said: "After much consideration, I am standing down from my position as manager of the Wales men's national team with immediate effect. It has been an honour and a privilege to manage my country, but it is only right that the Wales FA, the coaching staff and the players prepare for the tournament with certainty, clarification and without speculation around the position of their head coach." I just fail to understand why it has taken so long for him to quit and now he is quitting when it would all be over before they gather for the World Cup, after over a year of not doing so. It makes little sense.

Dundee United have appointed Jack Ross as their new head coach, replacing Tam Courts who left to manage Honved in Hungary. Ross has previously managed Sunderland and Hibernian.

Scott Lindsey has been promoted to the role of head coach at Swindon Town from assistant. The previous manager, Ben Garner, left to take charge at Charlton Athletic.

Former Juventus midfielder Alessio Tacchinardi has returned to management with Serie D side Lecco, who he managed previously in 2018.

Disciplinary Charges

Former Barcelona star and now president of the Cameroon Football Federation, Samuel Eto'o, has pleaded guilty to a £3.2m tax fraud in Spain. Eto'o, who also played for Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Chelsea and Everton, admitted failing to declare income from the transfer of image rights between 2006 and 2009 and was given a 22-month suspended prison sentence as well as being ordered to pay the money back and a £1.55m fine. His former agent Jose Maria Mesalles was given a 12-month suspended sentence and fine. Eto'o admitted transferring his image rights to a company based in Hungary, where the tax rate is one of the "lowest in Europe" and told the court: "I admit the facts and I am going to pay what I'm due, but let it be known that I was a just a child then and that I always did what my former agent Jose Maria Mesalles, who I considered like a father, asked me to do at that time." It is believed Eto'o was the one who paid his friend and former Barca teammate Ronaldinho's bail when he was in jail in Paraguay.

Poland have told their 66-cap left-back Maciej Rybus that he will not be going to the World Cup because he signed for Russian club Spartak Moscow on a free transfer this summer. Poland has taken in more than 3.5m Ukrainian refugees since the Russian invasion of their neighbour began and refused to play Russia in World Cup qualifying. A Polish FA statement read: "The coach of the Polish national team, Czeslaw Michniewicz, talked to Maciej Rybus, who was currently staying in Poland, after the training camp of the national team ended last week. The coach informed the player that, due to his current club situation, he would not be called up for the September training camp of the national team and would not take into account the team that would go to the World Cup in Qatar when determining the composition of the team."

Rangers have been fined £6,670 for throwing of object and lighting of fireworks by supporters at Ibrox in the second leg of their Europa League semi-final against RB Leipzig. Their run to the final cost them over £100,000 in fines from UEFA in total.

Eintracht Frankfurt's semi-final second leg against West Ham United has also seem them receive punishment. The Germans, who beat Rangers on penalties after extra time in the final, were fined 80,000 euros for crowd disorder, including a pitch invasion. They also have a suspended penalty of a game to be played behind closed doors hanging over their heads for the next two years.

Rams Debt To Increase

The sale of Derby County is getting increasingly more difficult as it has emerged that the administrators Quantuma are looking to take on a short-term loan to pay staff wages for June. Without further funding, season tickets cannot be put on sale and the club will be unable to sign players even if the transfer embargo they are under allows them to add some. The club currently has just 5 senior players contracted for next season and Quantuma's bumbling attempts to sell the club to the potless faker Chris Kirchner has set the sale process back many months. Rams' supporters groups have even gone so far as to send a joint letter to Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng to ask the politician to intervene and "expedite the sale of the club as soon as possible. Quantuma is borrowing further money to keep the club going - increasing the debt and making the club more difficult to sell and increasing frustration amongst fans, prospective purchasers, and now the EFL. You are the only person who can hold the administrators to account so can you please proceed to do so?" It does seem like the real problem here is Quantuma, who have shown themselves to be either utterly incompetent or deliberately obstructive. There are complaints from bidders that they receive no communication from them, despite having bid days ago, when the sale process should be the key priority. But then, the longer it takes the more they get paid....

Lyon Close To Sale

The end of controversial Olympique Lyonnais owner Jean-Michel Aulas' time at the club is close, despite one takeover bid falling by the wayside. Aulas was set to sell the majority of his stake to a consortium headed by Foster Gillett, the son of former Liverpool part-owner George Gillett. However the deal fell through and another US businessman, in the shape of John Textor, who bought a £90m stake in Crystal Palace recently, is close to taking over at Lyon. Textor, who owns around 40% of Palace as well as a majority stake in Botafogo in Brazil and a piece of Belgian side RWD Molenbeek, is looking to build a group similar to the City Group or Red Bull teams. Textor told CBS Sports: "My football plan is to create an ecosystem of cooperative top-tier clubs that will benefit from the sharing of a global footprint of talent identification. As I continue to be concerned that the competitive dominance of state owned teams, and other wealthy clubs, is damaging to the greater football landscape of community driven clubs, I am merely hoping to demonstrate that alternative approaches to competitiveness must be explored and encouraged. The idea that clubs and communities can collaborate to help each other is something that we should celebrate."

Messi Faces Saudi Storm

I was going to use the word backlash, but it seemed inappropriate when some people actually are getting lashes to the back in Saudi Arabia! However that, and the widely held belief that the Saudi regime murdered Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi, has not stopped Lionel Messi accepting a deal to be the face of Saudi tourism in return for a few quid. Messi was announced as ambassador for tourism in May and since then has posted a number of paid posts on social media with the hashtag #VisitSaudi. Messi is being accused of enabling, empowering and emboldening a dictator who is 'sportswashing' his country. I am not sure why people are so surprised, he has always been paid by Qatari money, first at Barcelona and now at Paris Saint-Germain. Clearly the world's highest-paid athlete for the year between May 2021 and 2022, with around £100m earnt, needs the extra money. It should be noted that Cristiano Ronaldo was also offered the same deal as Messi but has, as of yet anyway, not taken it up.
