Injury Round Up

Bristol City centre-back Nathan Baker is not expected to play in the forthcoming season. Nigel Pearson has revealed that he has ongoing problems due to a concussion he suffered in November, shortly after returning from a concussion injury he suffered in October. The Robins are also set to begin the season without striker Antoine Semenyo who suffered an injury while on international duty with Ghana.

Borussia Dortmund captain Marco Reus is expected to be fit for the start of the season despite suffering an injury while on international duty recently.

Job Changes

Wayne Rooney has quit as Derby County head coach, with the League One club still in turmoil and just 5 senior players contracted to the club. Rooney had thrown his considerable weight behind the failed takeover by Chris Kirchner.

Probably the best bit of news for the Premier League since it began has arrived today as Mike Riley, the hopeless head of PGMOL, has stepped down, at long last. Riley said: "Now is the right time to plan for the future and allow the new leadership team to build on the strong foundations that we have in place." Personally I would say the right time for him to go was the day before he was appointed, but better late than never! I think the most damning statement on his poor performance came from FA Chief Executive Mark Bullingham, who said: "Mike Riley has played a crucial role in the development of refereeing over recent years, both as an elite referee and during his tenure at PGMOL." While I think he probably meant it as a compliment, considering how far the quality of refereeing has deteriorated under him, it is far from complimentary.

Former Nottingham Forest and Rangers (both of the Queens Park Rangers and Scottish variety) boss Mark Warburton has become an assistant coach to David Moyes at West Ham United.

Disciplinary Charges

Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has been cleared of corruption by a Swiss appeals court. The charges were related to World Cup TV rights for BeIN Sports, with Al-Khelaifi being accused of inciting then FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke to commit aggravated criminal mismanagement, which he was acquitted of. It was found that Valcke had received "undue advantages" from Al-Khelaifi but the court decided that it did not adversely affect FIFA financially as there was no better deal on offer than the one from BeIN. Valcke, who is currently in the midst of a 10-year ban from football, was cleared of corruption too, however he was found guilty of accepting bribes and forging documents in a different case regarding the allotting of Italian and Greek media rights.

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood's bail on suspicion of rape and assault has been extended.

Bristol Rovers have ben hit by an FA charge for failing to control their fans during the 7-0 win over Scunthorpe United on the final day of the season. Rovers clinched automatic promotion to League One with the win. The 85th minutes goal by Elliot Anderson sparked a pitch invasion which caused a 20-minute delay to the match. They have also been charged with failing to control spectators after the final whistle when some fans again returned to the pitch to celebrate promotion.

Sheriff Tiraspol, the Moldovan club that shocked Real Madrid last season in the Champions League, have been told by UEFA to find a new home ground for European fixtures. Tiraspol is in the Moldovan breakaway region of Transnistria and UEFA stated: "FC Sheriff Tiraspol... have been invited to propose an alternative venue/stadium outside the region of Transnistria for its home matches in UEFA club competitions for as long as the prohibition to play in the region remains in force."

Hope For The Rams

A local property developer, David Clowes, has bought Derby County's Pride Park stadium and is now attempting to buy the football club to put in it. Clowes company, Clowes Developments (UK) Ltd, has loaned the club the money to allow them to start the season. The purchase of the stadium had been causing problems, but Clowes managed to buy it just over a week ago, with the sale kept confidential until the loan agreement was completed. The EFL has confirmed that they have begun their Owners and Directors' Test process.

Everton Fans Protest

A total of over 20,000 people have signed an online petition to protest against Everton's new sponsor, which is a online gambling company called casino stake.com. Everton had previously said that betting sponsors are "not ideal" but took a commercial decision to take the money after posting £372m in losses over the last 3 seasons. Though it should be pointed out that most of those losses were due to overspending by themselves on poor quality players.
