Laporta said: "He is a Barca player of great quality and we want him to stay. He has offers but we want him to stay and he wants to stay too." I wonder what other family silver they can sell instead? Hopefully La Liga will stay strong and keep catching out their attempts to get around the regulations with claims of income that they have not actually received!

I want to share this message with you and tell you that Real Betis will continue to be my home this season. It is true that both the club and I received a proposal to join another team. I am grateful for the important offer I have received, but after talking, both Real Betis and I have decided to continue our journey together. The love of the fans, the sports project and the confidence that they have shown me from all levels of the club have led me to give my commitment to Betis. I want to continue growing with Betis and all my efforts will be aimed at giving my best to make this season unforgettable again. Mucho Betis!"

17-year-old Paraguayan midfielder Hugo Francisco Cuenca Martinez has signed for AC Milan from Deportivo Capiata. For once a player had the sense to choose someone else over the mess that is Barcelona.

Injury Round Up

Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has joined their injury list with a low-grade lesion of the adductor longus muscle of the left thigh.

Job Changes

Sebastien Desabre has cleared up the problems with Chamois Niortais which nearly stopped him becoming head coach of the DR Congo. The French Ligue 2 club had threatened to take legal action after Desabre was announced, saying that FECOFA (DR Congo's football federation) had not been in contact with them over the move. However they have now agreed to terminate Desabre's contract so that he can take up the new role.

Gillingham chairman Paul Scally is stepping back from day-to-day running of the club due to the abuse he has suffered from fans. A statement on the club's official website from him read: "There is no question that right now, I am physically and mentally exhausted from the efforts, stress, strain and worries of the past couple of years, coupled with the personal abuse effects, and need a break to recharge my batteries. This abuse has been unacceptable, unfair, malicious, painful and without merit, no one individual should ever be subjected to such abuse, especially when simply getting on with their job in hand, in their place of work. Those involved are shameful and should look closely in a mirror, they certainly do not represent the views of normal decent supporters, nor, in my view, society as a whole. I am one human being and unfortunately this level of abuse and intrusion into my private space has had a huge effect on me personally, both mentally and physically, it has undoubtedly had some effect on the business and club, but more importantly it has affected my family and close friends, something I am unable, nor prepared to reconcile, despite the help and support of many that also care about this great club. The past two years have been particularly punishing, I have worked non-stop to ensure the Club came through the Covid period, faced challenges the like of which I have never experienced, both from a business and personal perspective."

Disciplinary Charges

Coventry City's home Carabao Cup first-round tie against Bristol City has been moved to Burton Albion's Pirelli Stadium due to the pitch being deemed "unsafe" to play on after hosting the rugby sevens matches for the Commonwealth Games. The ground, which also hosted concerts over the summer, is owned by rugby side Wasps.

More turmoil has hit Barcelona as there are now claims that four of their players have contracts with signed of alleged "criminality" involving former Barca president Josep Bartomeu. Those four, Frenkie De Jong, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Clement Lenglet and Gerard Pique could well have their contracts annuled and a return to their previous deals. Barca, in its attempts to save money, are threatening legal action against the quartet unless they accept a reversion to their old deals. It all smacks of desperation as it has been revealed that Barca are still well short of the funds required to register their five new signings and are unlikely to have enough to do so even with the activation of their 4th financial lever of selling a further 24.5% stake in Barca Studios, despite that being expected to raise nearly £100m. It is believe Barca would need to find another £50m to enable them to register the quintet. Bartomeu has hit back at the allegations and pointed out that the contracts were ratified by the club's lawyers, external auditors and verified by La Liga. Barca's first attempt to register their signings was rejected by La Liga after the club used its own funds to inflate the value of two of the levers they had sold. The Catalans had claimed to have brought in more than £800m, including £562m from the sale of future TV rights in two packets to investers Sixth Street. However a La Liga audit found that Barca actually received under £500m from Sixth Street and the rest was paid by the club itself. Barca had set up a company called Locksley Investments which bought the packages on a permanent basis. Sixth Street than bought the next 25 years of TV coverage before the club itself paid 150m euros to buy the rights from the 26th year. While the move was not illegal, it has been dismissed by the league on the basis that the extra 150m euros the club paid is not new income. All of which suggests that the "criminality" in the contracts and legal action threats are more about forcing the players to take a pay cut, like the ones they are trying to convince Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba to take. Certainly their fans are trying their best to pressure players into taking a pay cut, following reports Martin Braithwaite refused to take a pay cut the forward was soundly booed by a large section of the crowd ahead of the Joan Gamper Trophy friendly match against Mexican side UNAM Pumas.

Sassuolo forward Domenico Berardi has apologised after being caught on a video that has been widely circulated on social media of him chasing an abusive fan. The Italian international had to be restrained by police in the aftermath of a shock Coppa Italia defeat to Serie B Modena. Berardi wrote on social media: "I want to apologise for what happened outside the stadium after the game against Modena. We are professionals and, above all, we must be examples for youths and kids. Today I didn't behave as such. That's because the things that I love the most, such as my wife and my son, were deliberately involved off the pitch, hurting me deeply. I also renew my apologies to the opposing fans."

Schalke 04 midfielder Dominick Drexler has been given a two-match ban by the DFB.

City Up For Grabs

Bristol City owner Steve Lansdown has admitted he is willing to sell the club. Lansdown has been involved with Bristol City since 1996 and was chairman from 2002 until 2011, with his son Jon the current incumbent. The billionaire has now said: "I would [sell]. I think if it was the right deal, but I'm not [actively] looking to sell the club. I'm looking for people to come in and invest, but some people might want to come in and do the whole thing and then it would be another discussion. I'm 70 this month and the family has been involved for a long time and we can't keep doing it forever." Lansdown owns the Bristol Sport Franchise, which he created, that also owns Bristol City's women's football team, Bristol Bears men's and women's rugby teams and Bristol Flyers basketball team. Under Lansdown, the Robins have redeveloped their Ashton Gate ground and built a training centre.
