Football News: Review Of The Day 16th October 2022
Review of the Day
Contracts
England midfielder Phil Foden has signed a new contract with Manchester City which will expire in 2027.
Real Sociedad have given midfielder Martin Zubimendi a deal which will run until 2027.
Douglas Luiz has extended his contract with Aston Villa until 2026.
Transfers
Dundee United have signed veteran free agent Cameroon midfielder Arnaud Djoum to their squad. Djoum left Apollon Limassol in the summer and has previously played for United's head coach Liam Fox while the pair were at Heart of Midlothian.
Frenkie De Jong has admitted that he was under pressure to leave Barcelona in the summer, including from club president Joan Laporta, telling Ziggo Sport: "I was calm. I decided in May that I wanted to stay. My opinion never changed during the whole period. I remained calm. But then, you know, the pressure started coming. From the newspapers, from the president...from everywhere, in fact. But I wanted to stay at Barça, so it never bothered me."
Injury Round Up
Chelsea right-back Reece James is expected to miss 8 weeks with the knee injury he picked up against AC Milan on Tuesday evening. With the World Cup due to start in 5 weeks, it looks likely that Gareth Southgate will be at least one short of his usual eleven right-backs he picks in every squad.
Rangers centre-back Connor Goldson will be out for "several months" according to head coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst. The 29-year-old picked up a thigh injury during the 7-1 thrashing against Liverpool in the Champions League with the score at 1-1.
Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo's surgery was successful and he has begun his rehab, but it is still expected that he will not be back playing until after the World Cup.
Job Changes
Disciplinary Charges
Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has finally been charged, 9 months after his initial arrest. The 21-year-old has been charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling behaviour and assault. He was arrested again last week for allegedly breaking his bail conditions by contacting the alleged victim.
Brentford have condemned racist abuse aimed at their striker Ivan Toney after the forward scored twice to inflict a 2-0 defeat on Brighton & Hove Albion. Toney posted a screenshot of the abuse he received via direct message saying: "I wasn't even going to post this but I woke up angry". Brentford stated: "An attack on one of our players is an attack on all of us. Ivan will receive the full backing from the club and from the Brentford fans who we have already seen condemning the abuse. We expect strong support from the police, legal authorities and from Instagram's parent company, Meta, to ensure that the individual involved faces the full force of the law for this despicable hate crime." It was Toney's family, along with Bees team-mate Rico Henry's family, that received racist abuse at Goodison Park following a 3-2 Brentford win over Everton.
A trio of Anderlecht fans have been convicted after trouble in their defeat by West Ham United in the Europa Conference League on Thursday. Joey Degroof was sentenced to 8 weeks in prison for assaulting an emergency worker. Dean Pierre Daquano was fined £120 for going onto the pitch. Fredrik Jules Desnet was fined £200 for racially and/or religiously aggravated harassment. Both Daquano and Desnet were also given 3-year football banning orders.
Ghana's Premier League is to remain suspended after a case being the country's football association (GFA) and club side Ashanti Gold was adjourned. Gold are challenging their demotion from the top flight to the third tier after the GFA found them guilty of match-fixing. The case has been adjourned until 20th October now.
For the third time in 12 months Luton Town have reported racist abuse aimed at their forward Elijah Adebayo to the police and English Football League. A club statement read: "We have had enough of saying enough is enough. This despicable discrimination simply has to stop. For the third time in less than a year, Luton Town Football Club has had to report or assist with enquiries into disgusting racist abuse aimed at our striker Elijah Adebayo. Two racist slurs from the same account on our Instagram post of the scoreline at the end of the win over Queens Park Rangers, which have been widely shared on social media, were reported to Instagram's parent company, Meta, and the EFL immediately by the club. We are appalled that we are having to do this in 2022. As our players continue to do just before kick-off in all matches in which we participate, everyone at Kenilworth Road stands together with Elijah and any other player who suffers racist abuse, either online or in person. Bedfordshire Police have been made aware of the posts and we have spoken to Elijah to offer him all the support he needs if he wishes to take this forward."

Bayern Put Off Qatar Decision
Despite repeated calls from Bayern Munich fans to scrap the deal, Bayern Chief Executive Oliver Kahn has revealed that a decision on whether to extend the controversial sponsorship deal with Qatar Airways has been put off until next year. The deal has been so hated by fans that last year's AGM ended in chaos as members shouted and booed the club's directors for refusing to discuss scrapping the arrangement. The Bavarians also announced their financial results for the 2021-22 season, with strong financial growth as turnover reached 665.7m euros and pre-tax profits increased from 5m euros to 17.1m. The club made 224.2m euros from sponsorship and marketing, 159.5m from matchdays and 93.6m from merchandising. The biggest expense was their wage bill for all staff, which was 324.1m.
