Championship side Reading have appointed ex-West Bromwich Albion manager Steve Clarke as their new manager. Clarke replaces Nigel Adkins, who was sacked on Monday following Saturday's 6-1 loss to Birmingham.

Reading have lost nine of their last 15 matches in all competitions and are sitting a lowly 16th in the Championship.

Clarke said about his appointment at the Madejski Stadium, "I am absolutely delighted to be joining Reading Football Club. I look forward to helping the club move in the right direction."

"A big part of the work ahead is on the training ground and I look forward to meeting the players and getting on to the grass with them.

"There is real potential here and hopefully exciting times ahead for the supporters."

The Scot, 51, took over at The Hawthorns in June 2012, replacing Roy Hodgson following his appointment as England manager, but was eventually placed on "gardening leave" in December 2013 with WBA sitting only two points clear of the relegation places in the Premier League.

That was Clarke's first managerial role, having previously been assistant boss at Chelsea, Liverpool and West Ham.
