Football News: Who's To Blame For The Mess At Glasgow Rangers

Who's To Blame For The Mess At Glasgow Rangers

A lot of blame is being put on Philippe Clement, but what about the actual players at his disposal? For me, a lot of the blame lies with the mess he has inherited from previous incumbents at Glasgow Rangers.

Players who have underachieved season after season. Players deemed not good enough year on year and yet the supporters still expect any new manager to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

Reality has to dawn at some point. We are in the middle of a massive rebuild. Everyone has been crying out for season after season to revamp the squad and every season we moan that it's the same faces playing week in, week out. Now that we have decided to reset and rebuild, fans don't have the patience to see the very thing they have been crying out for since Gerrard left.

It's not easy to revamp a playing squad and be successful - especially in the goldfish bowl of Glasgow. Not easy to revamp a playing squad where some of the players are on over inflated wages. Not easy to revamp a playing squad when no one is interested in the players you want to move on. And why should they be? If we don't think they are good enough then why would others?

We started the summer transfer window by signing young potential talent and confirmed the full-time signature of Diomande, Jefte, Cortes, Nsiala, Barron and Igamane. Average age - 21. We also added experienced players in Kelly, Propper and Cerny to bolster the squad.

The Players who left had either run down their contracts (including injury prone players ) or who many deemed not good enough on a consistent basis - Lundstram, Jack, Roofe, Barisic, McLaughlin, McCrorie, Lammers and Goldson. Average age - 31.

We also sent Wright (GK) and Cifuentes on loan. No surprise that Lammers (who most thought was a disappointment) found a club in his native Holland after his exploits on loan last season.

There is not one person from those who have left either permanently or on loan that any of us would have kept. Now this is the interesting part. Who would you still keep or want to move on from the remaining squad?

GK - Butland and Budinauckas.

DF - Tav, Yilmaz, Souttar, Sterling, Davies, Balogun, King and Devine.

MF - Cantwell, Dowell, Hagi, Raskin, McKinnon, Rice and Lowry.

FW - Dessers, Lawrence, Matondo, Wright, McCausland and Danilo.

From this list of 23, I personally would be happy to see the back of (including those apparently wanting away) 17 of them.

If I think 17 aren't good enough, how many does Clement think aren't good enough and needs to work with them in the meantime? Until we can move some players on and free up funds for replacements, what would your line up / formation be with the players currently at Clement's disposal?

It's obvious the board see Clement as the man to see this re-build through. A genuine step backward might just allow us to take those 2 steps forward?
