Football News: Philippe Clement - Excuses versus Accountability
Managers get hired for a variety of reasons; Headhunted because they are doing well elsewhere. Get the job as they are available and their previous accomplishments are taken into account.
Clement got the Glasgow Rangers job because Gio had flopped. He would have been told the remit when he was interviewed for the job. The most important criteria is make Rangers successful again. That doesn't mean the odd trophy here and there. It means challenging for titles, winning domestic cups.
That means giving a decent account of ourselves in Europe for the financial riches this can bring. It means revamping an unsuccessful squad in terms of trophies won. Revamping the squad in terms of quality and revamping the squad by reducing the wage bill and getting value for money.
Reducing the wage bill doesn't need to impact the quality of the squad. It means shifting on overpaid, underperforming or injured players and replacing these players with young, hungry players backed up by some quality experienced pros.
It means not wasting money signing players who just don't have what it takes for the rough and tumble of the Scottish league. But will play out of their skin that the freedom Europa Thursdays bring.
The balance of signings has to be players who will get us back to winning domestically and can also raise their game for Europa Thursdays, not the opposite way around.
We can blame the way the club has been run. We can blame previous managers for signings that didn't work out. But when all is said and done, Clement is the man in the dugout.
It's a results driven business and for me, the Board are not going to sack him this season. But we need to see real progress. And real progress isn't beating Celtic then dropping points in the next 2 games. It isn't seeing Nsiala, Igamane, Jefte etc. getting a chance in the team - a lot of this was down to injuries or poor form to others as previously they weren't deemed ready.
Real progress in the remainder of the season is going on a winning run, lifting the Scottish Cup and getting through the groups of the Europa League. Otherwise we are staring down the barrel of another season of failure with huge decisions to be made for next season.
Clement has it all to prove to fans who have lost patience in the project. Only time will tell if the excuses will stop and he takes accountability in a results driven business.
