Football News: Before And After Steven Gerrard As Rangers Manager

Before And After Steven Gerrard As Rangers Manager

A quick look at before and after Steven Gerrard as Glasgow Rangers manager.

Despite the flaws and question marks over his tenure, can anyone seriously say we weren't several times better under Gerrard? I would take the 1 in 9 thing more seriously if we as a club had actually done remotely anything worthwhile before or after Gerrard's time at the club.

2016 promotion until Gerrard: 0 out of 6 trophies (and obviously 0 League Championships).

Post Gerrard: 2 out of 12 (0 League Championships).

Total Number of trophies since 2016: 3 out of a possible 27 (1 League Championship).

Our record is something that we as a club should be taking more responsibility for. There comes a point where the people running the club have to be the ones taken to account rather than judging individual managers.

We've been a complete mess from top to bottom, making all sorts of poor decisions, recruitment a sham, players overstaying their welcome, the list could go on and on.

Yet, I would argue, you take the stats away and go by how everything felt at the time and those 3 Gerrard years is the only time this decade it felt like I was watching a real Rangers team.

He came in, addressed a poor spine of a team and brought in the likes of McGregor, Goldson, Davis, Defoe etc. We improved season on season. The Euro Performance upturn was astronomical.

Frankly, when all the context is taken into consideration, nobody could say that Gerrard's first stint was anything other than a major success. He doesn't get the job of a top half EPL team if he wasn't good with us, and that's a fact.

For me the improvements are clear:

1. He had us improving year on year, despite the collapses, every year was an improvement.

2. Our shape and organisation, on and off the ball was incredible, the best I've ever seen from us.

3. He brought us respect back and immediately stopped us leaking goals. If I remember correctly, we never lost either by 2, or more than 2 goals in his entire tenure, which is incredible considering what came before and after.

4. He won the League at a canter going undefeated and then left us 8 points clear at the top.

5. He had us being the absolute fittest by a country mile. The amount of times we played 120 mins back to back and looked like we could have done another 120 mins was again incredible.

What's happened since is another thing altogether, would I have him back? - Of course I would he won the most important title of them all.
