Football News: It's Not Just The Players Fault At Manchester United
I've heard so much from some quarters about how it's the players at fault rather than the system, well I do think the most pertinent point is being missed by miles - we still have the Manchester United players to look far better in a 4-3-3.
In Maz, we have one of the best RBs in the EPL. In Dorgu, we have a player who is developing very well and would likely become a top LB. Then, we have Dalot, Shaw, Kamason, Amass and Leon. Of those 7 players, only Dorgu has proven to be EPL standard as a wingback. What does that say?
The 3 at the back system can only work when the players have the pace to file in and become compact when under pressure, only Yoro has that pace so we simply cannot execute the 3-4-3 the way Ruben Amorim (RA) would like. What does that say?
In Cas / Ugarte, Mainoo and Fernandes, we have a potential midfield 3 who, while still not quick, can each play to their respective strengths in positions that suit them best - destroyer, progressor and creator.
However, RA tasks Cas/ Ugarte and Fernandes with the responsibility of holding the midfield fort when we're under pressure - no legs and our best creator wholly out of position while opponents just ghost through them. What does that say?
For all the attacking threat we carry on paper, we are missing that vital cog of creation because he's trying to adapt his natural game to a position that nullifies his quality and makes us more predictable.
For all the defensive IQ our defenders have, they lack the pace and mobility to adequately deal with the pressure they face when our inadequate midfield setup is so weak and overwhelmed.
What does all that say?
If, despite the reality that everyone can see in almost every game, RA still persists with his stubborn refusal to be flexible as a coach, after witnessing another abysmal display of how his system is so predictable and easily unpicked, when we have the players who can do far better in a 4-3-3, then what does that really say?
It says to me that this just isn't working out. I wish it was because I like the guy, but the argument from some that it's the players at fault can only stretch to ability and it is this reality that makes the obstinate insistence for the 3-4-3 a matter of failure on the level of match day selection - RA makes that call and that says all I need to know.
What does it say to you?
