Why Kounde Feels Like a Liverpool Fit
Jules Kounde is portrayed as a high-level, team-first defender with the work rate and 1v1 qualities that could suit Liverpool's demand for intensity and defending big spaces.
From everything we've seen over the last few years, I'd say Kounde is one of the most respected defenders in European football, not just because of his ability, but because of his professionalism.
Professionalism and mentality
What do people say about his personality? The overall picture is very positive.
He comes across as extremely professional, with coaches consistently praising how seriously he takes his preparation. He also seems humble, rarely seeking the spotlight and usually letting his football do the talking.
There is also the sense he's intelligent and mature in interviews, with interests outside football, and that he carries a team-first mentality. You do not hear many stories about ego or dressing-room issues.
Regarding the story that he runs to training, there have been reports and anecdotes over the years about him choosing to run or cycle rather than drive on occasion as part of his fitness routine. It certainly fits his reputation for discipline, but I would not say it is confirmed that he literally runs to every training session.
Work rate and role
Work rate: 10/10. This is probably his biggest selling point. Kounde is relentless.
He constantly overlaps from right-back, tracks runners all game, rarely switches off defensively, and has incredible stamina and recovery speed. Barcelona fans have often pointed out that he barely gets rested because coaches trust him so much.
Qualities: strengths and weaknesses
His strengths are clear: elite 1v1 defending, quick over the ground, excellent reading of danger, calm under pressure, and comfortable receiving the ball in tight spaces. He can play both centre-back and right-back at a very high level, and he is very consistent.
There are weaknesses too. At around 5'11" (1.80 m), he is not dominant in the air compared with giants like Van Dijk. He can occasionally get caught too high when playing an attacking full-back role, and he is not the most creative crosser, although he has improved a lot.
Would he suit Liverpool?
Would he suit Andoni Iraola's Liverpool? I actually think he'd be an excellent fit. Everything Iraola has spoken about since arriving at Liverpool revolves around aggressive pressing, intensity, winning the ball high, energetic defenders, and players who are comfortable defending large spaces.
Those are exactly Kounde's strengths. He'd be ideal if Liverpool want a right-back who can defend first, someone who can tuck into a back three, or cover centre-back without the level dropping.
Would Liverpool fans like him? I think he'd become a favourite quite quickly because Liverpool supporters generally appreciate players who work relentlessly, do not complain, stay humble, and put the team first.
Kounde ticks every one of those boxes. If Liverpool could sign him for a reasonable fee, I think he'd be one of the smartest defensive signings available. He is not flashy like some defenders, but managers love players they can trust every week.
