Rangers Still Waiting for Marquee Quality

Rangers Still Waiting for Marquee Quality

Concerns remain that Rangers have left key business too late and focused on numbers rather than genuine starters. The feeling is the squad still lacks the marquee quality needed to raise standards.

It feels like Rangers have left it far too late to bring in the so-called quality needed, and it also feels like we have not spent enough in the market. I am still waiting on the marquee signings, and I cannot be the only one.

Quantity over quality again?

Let's not forget that last summer when Chermiti was signed for 8-10 million, Mr Andrew Cavenaugh himself said this was going to start to become the norm. It once again looks like we have gone for quantity over quality, and I would have rather seen 5-6 players at 6+ mill each come in the door that would walk into the starting line-up, with the likes of Rommens, Fernandez, Chukuwuani and Raskin round about them.

Instead, it feels like we have blitzed the midfield with signings and over-inflated the squad, whilst struggling to sell assets and dead wood. Despite a few signings like Penrice and Dragojevic, I still believe this has been a window of failure where we cannot seem to bring in our NO1 or even NO2 targets for the key positions.

Late scrambling and a familiar pattern

We are once again scrambling around in the last two weeks of a window to find quality instead of getting the quality in earlier, and that has a knock-on effect. When you start slowly you end up playing catch up, and that is not where Rangers should be.

I would love to see a window where we walk away thinking this has been a fantastic window and we are ready to go.

Spending, expectations and what was hoped for

I do think the board have spent a lot, so you cannot question their commitment, but this summer has not been what I believe most of us expected. They made a mess of last season and, with nearly 40 million pounds spent and finishing third with no trophies, I would have expected another proper push.

Before anyone brings up FFP, the view is that we are miles below the threshold and we have sold too. Names mentioned include Igamane, Dessers, Jefte, Diomande and Butland, and Raskin may still go.

What would have looked like a statement

I wanted a real statement of intent this summer. In my head that looked like bringing Mikey Moore back even if on loan again, going out and getting Dahl and Ferguson, getting Cerny back, and finding a real experienced top class centre back. I am very happy with Dragojevic, but what we actually have is nowhere close to the level I hoped for.

Ideally, I think most people wanted a midfield of Ferguson, Dahl and Dragojevic, with Chukuwuani and Devlin as cover, maybe even Aasgaard as a more attacking option. It just feels like regression every year, and like we are not taking it seriously enough or understanding the enormous fix the team needs to compete.

This season I was looking for something like: Pandur, Nedljkovic (loan at the moment), Fernandez (needs his finger out), a top class centre back, Rommens/Penrice, Ferguson, Dahl, Dragojevic, Cerny, Moore, and Chermiti/Shankland, with the obvious point now being that we need to go and spend on a striker.

If we had managed to pull something like that together my confidence would have been through the roof. I want to believe our current squad can have a go, but I do not know if I fully feel it. Here's hoping for a good result tonight.
