Wolves Ratings v Sheffield United

Wolves pick up a win despite a poor overall performance, with Sheffield United offering little going forward but pressing physically. Player ratings highlight Djiga and Gomes, plus mixed views on Andre and Jimenez.

Wolverhampton Wanderers Ratings v Sheffield United

Only saw the game on TV so apologies to those that went and had a different view. A poor performance in a match with 2 sides that looked remarkably ordinary. However, a win is a win.

Sheffield did very little offensively but were physical and Wolves struggled to cope with the power of their press. Sadly this is likely to be a feature that Wolves will have to contend with most weeks.

Ratings

Sa - 6 Was never really troubled and did the small amount that he had to reasonably comfortably.

Jackson - 6 After the nightmare last week, this was a quiet game in which he looked as comfortable as you will ever see him.

Krejci - 5 Was lucky not to be sent off when, for the second time, he was caught in possession and brought his man down. Otherwise, a solid performance against modest opposition.

Djiga - 7 Was the best of a much improved defence. Astonishingly, he has gone from unwanted and sent out on loan to the key man in defence.

Bueno - 6 Not sure why he is so disliked on social media and his offence - his stronger hand - is so casually dismissed. Perfectly competent at this level.

Andre - 6 Unusually, I was less impressed by him today than the media and others were. Maybe because Wolves were more comfortable, his tremendous engine and defence were not as obviously on display. But for me he is still not as sharp on the ball as I would like, and I have to acknowledge that he has, as others have identified previously, occasionally been guilty of overplaying.

Munetsi - 6 Should have scored from a great move that left him a clear shot from near the penalty spot. Works hard but lacks the quality to impose himself.

Lopez - 6 Was far less dominant than he has been in previous games but still looked a class act.

Mane - 6 Another who is criticised far more than he deserves. He is undoubtedly raw, he is still v young and inexperienced after all, and probably needs to improve his decision making but is one of those players who are able to open up a defence with a bit of magic. Should have won a penalty and was unlucky not to get more decisions from a ref who allowed Sheffield to be more physical than would have been allowed in the Prem.

Armstrong - 4 Sadly he was played in a position that he simply can't be expected to play. Was barely involved, albeit this was a low quality game in which whoever had played up front for Wolves would have struggled to impose themselves.

Gomes - 7 Was Wolves most creative player and combines this with a very high work rate and a strong competitive edge.

Subs

James - 5 Did not have the impact he has had in other games.

Jimenez - 5 Scored the winner but missed 2 other good chances. Glimmers of returning to form - he was in the position to miss 2 chances - but Wolves need him to step up and soon!

Trippier - 6 Played a major part in the goal and should be a significant uplift to the side going forwards.

Doyle - 6 Once again impressed. Good in possession and solid. I may have been overly harsh writing him off earlier on in the season due to his lack of pace and physicality.

Toti - 6 Did not do anything daft but Sheffield did not offer much going forwards anyway.
