Football News: Southampton want Toby to stay

Ronald Koeman has confirmed a desire to sign Toby Alderweireld on a permanent deal from Atletico Madrid.

The Belgian defender joined Southampton on a season long loan after a difficult season in the Spanish capital.

Alderweireld has been a regular fixture in the Saints line up, not just in his preferred role of centre back, but also filling in at right back and defensive midfield on occasion.

Now Koeman has admitted that it is up to the player himself if he wants to turn the loan into a permanent deal.

I've spoken with Toby and I told him that I want him to stay at Southampton permanently", Koeman said. "Now the ball is in his court. He has time to think about it."
