Football News: Stevie May is not the issue

Stevie May is not the issue

I have seen a lot of criticism of Stevie May's lack of goals since joining Sheffield Wednesday from St. Johnstone in Scotland. The general opinion seems to be that he works hard but is not good enough for the Championship and that is why he has not scored many goals.

Personally I feel that is a bit harsh on the lad, though I do remain unconvinced that he is a top goalscorer myself, he does seem to be good enough for the Championship. It is difficult to criticise his goalscoring record when, not only has he been used out wide in a number of games, so few goals are being scored by the team overall.

To me it seems the style of play is more of an issue than May's quality, with very little created for anyone to score, let alone May. The whole team seem to be built around the same qualities that May possesses, hard work and industry, but not a whole lot of guile.

Until the style of play changes, to a more attacking format, the Owls are always going to be a bit toothless and reliant on Kieran Westwood to keep them in matches. Nothing wrong with keeping it tight and snatching low scoring wins, but it only takes you so far in this league, and that isn't as far as the Prem.
