Chelsea season review

Chelsea were head and shoulders above the rest of the Premier League this season, pretty much having the league title sewn up before Christmas, and were able to coast over the line without any real problems at all.

In the first half of the season, Jose let the players off the leash, Chelsea were open, attractive to watch and outplayed most of the teams they faced, in style too.

The second half of the season was more like the usual Mourinho football we have come to expect, defending deep, working hard and concentrating on keeping a clean sheet.

With two trophies in the bag, it is difficult to criticise anything that Chelsea did last season, but, it must be said, their Champions League failings were obvious.

Chelsea are light years ahead of the Premier League teams, though it must be said this was a very poor Prem season in terms of quality outside of Chelsea, but they are well behind the top European clubs, with no sign of them being able to compete with the Bayern Munichs and Barcelonas any time soon.

This summer will be an important one for the club, time to invest in a bit more quality in the forward areas if they really intend to compete at European level, as they are far too reliant on Diego Costa's fitness right now.

Without Costa up top, occupying the opposition defence, it is far too easy for opponents to put extra bodies on Eden Hazard, and Cesc Fabregas is unsuited to the deeper role and simply not good enough for European level in the more forward role.

Willian offers lots of workrate and heart, but the quality is lacking, Oscar is just simply not making any progress, he still plays like a boy, so it is important to buy someone to help out Hazard, Juan Cuadrado is too much of a wild card to be relied on for that.

The biggest question of all though is John Terry, has he got another season like this one left in the tank or was this him emptying it all in one final season of giving it everything?

Terry was undoubtedly, no matter what anyone thinks about him as a person, the Premier League player of the season, he was the rock that Chelsea's success was built on.

With or without Terry, it would be a brave person who predicted anyone else to win the Prem next season, but will they be able to compete at the top end in Europe?
