Football News: Should Birmingham Sell Gray?

Should Birmingham Sell Gray?

Birmingham City have been in serious difficulty for a while now, the sale of the club to Carson Yeung just increased the problems, especially after his assets were frozen by a court in his home country. Now though, they have had a few years to steady the ship following relegation from the Premier League and have settled into the Championship as a relegation struggler.

So far players such as Jack Butland and Nathan Redmond have had to be sold to keep the Blue half of Birmingham afloat, but things are no longer so serious that the club is forced to sell to survive. Now they can choose to sell on their terms, and get the best price possible.

While that also means they could choose to hang on to Demarai Gray for another year, that means accepting a struggle at the foot of the table with little cash to invest in squad strengthening. Could now be the time to sell the youngster, if a good price is forthcoming of course, to give Gary Rowett some money to spend on players?

The only issue is ensuring that the money is invested wisely, as for every David Moyes selling Wayne Rooney and improving the Everton team with the money they received, there is a Tottenham Hotspur selling Gareth Bale or Liverpool selling Luis Suarez and wasting the money on players that failed to improve the team. Can Rowett be trusted to spend the little money he has wisely, or would he simply go out and buy a bunch of players to fill the subs bench?

So far Rowett has shown signs of being a decent judge of players, but it is still early days in his managerial career, so the risk would be huge, though it would be a much smaller risk than if they had handed the money to Lee Clark. The gamble is huge, but I believe it has to be taken if Brum are to lift themselves from the bottom half of the Championship and once in the top half there is always hope of a play off promotion.
