Football News: Is Cech Right For Arsenal

Is Cech Right For Arsenal

There is a lot of talk about Petr Cech moving to Arsenal this summer, with Thibaut Courtois being the Chelsea number one now. With Roman Abramovich promising to let the Czech keeper go to whoever he wishes as a thank you for his service, the possibility has been raised in the media.

With Cech, and his family, being settled in London, and Arsenal also being in London, it has become the source of much speculation that he would end up joining the Gunners this summer. Even if you discount Jose Mourinho's comments about how he would prefer not to sell such a quality goalie to a local rival, it is still not a deal that really stands out as the sensible move for either party.

It is hard to argue with the fact the Cech could pretty much walk into any side in world football and be automatic first choice, there is a very limited number of keepers that could keep him sat on the bench. He has just been unlucky that Chelsea acquired one of those select few!

While Arsenal would undoubtedly be improved by having Cech between the sticks, rather than Ospina, it would not be a huge improvement, not like it was when Ospina replaced Szczesny. Small improvements like that are the kind that you save for when the rest of the side is complete, which is a position Arsenal have not yet reached.

Having said that, how often does a keeper of the class of Cech come onto the market? It is very rare, so it would be understandable if Wenger thinks this opportunity is too good to pass up. It would put them in a very strong position with three truly outstanding players, in Cech, Sanchez and Ozil, in their team for Wenger to build around.

This summer will show us just what ambition Arsenal truly have, more than the signings of Ozil and Sanchez did, as the right signings will make the Gooners a very real title threat. The emergence of Francis Coquelin, from a lad on the verge of being bombed out of the club, to a central figure in the team, has raised Arsenal up a level. Is Cech able to take the team up another step?
