Football News: Everton Can Not Afford To Let Coleman Leave

Everton Can Not Afford To Let Coleman Leave

A few years back, the most important player to his club was probably Everton's Leighton Baines. He was vital, not just because of his play, but because there was no real alternative in the squad to replace him if he had been sold.

Nowadays, even if Luke Garbutt does decide to move on, there is Bryan Oviedo as an excellent replacement for Baines, within the squad, so his importance is lessened to the Toffees. This season it is probably Seamus Coleman that Everton can least afford to lose, again because of a lack of a ready alternative in the squad.

With the loss of Sylvain Distin this summer, John Stones is now no longer able to provide cover for the right back position, unless it is an emergency. With the ever reliable, but lacking in attacking prowess, Tony Hibbert as the only senior option to replace him in the squad.

There are a number of promising defenders coming through from the youth, but none are specialist right backs, which means selling him would force the club into the transfer market for a new right back. In previous years that would not be a major issue, but Roberto Martinez has a very mixed (to be polite) record with bringing in players, plus there are a real lack of quality right backs around.

Who is there that Everton could go and get to replace him? There was Kieron Trippier, but then Burnley sold him to Tottenham Hotspur, so he is now out. Maybe Nathaniel Clyne could have been an option, but really it does seem that a replacement will have to come from outside of the English league, which has a dearth of right backs right now.

My personal belief is that Everton need to hold on to Seamus Coleman for one more season while easing Tyias Browning into the team gradually, ready to sell Coleman next summer. With a contract that would still have 3 years left to run, his age would only be 27 and his value should be at his peak.

The gamble of losing him this summer is just not worth taking, no matter the money received, as holding on to him is such a low risk option. Keep him this year and then weigh it all up all over again next summer, as selling him in this transfer window makes little sense to Everton FC.
