What Do You Do With Stevie May

When you have a player like Stevie May in your team it is difficult to know what to do with him. He works really hard, offers so much to the team outside of the box, harrying defenders, linking up with the midfield, but once inside the box he seems to be lost.

May's goal record north of the border was good, though mainly outside the SPFL, but the step up in level seems to be just too much for him. At only 22, the new Sheffield Wednesday manager, Carlos Carvalhal, has to decide now if the potential is there for him to regain his goal touch for the Owls.

There are other options, could he drop deeper and play as the link between midfield and a striker, or possibly move wide ala Dirk Kuyt, to make the most out of his workrate. There is always the option to sell him, to recoup some funds to build the team, with interest from a number of clubs in the SPFL.

The problem for Carvalhal is that he only has a limited time to assess these options, unlike the fans, who have been able to watch him all season to form their opinions. So whatever decision he makes is going to be based on a very limited field of information, which makes it difficult.

For me, in this era of FFP rules affecting the movement of funds, it would probably be best to move him on, accept a good offer, and use those funds towards buying better players. I know he had a good record in Scotland, but he never really looked outstanding there, never looked like a player destined for the top.

The new ownership of Wednesday is aiming for the Premier League, May is nowhere near good enough for that level, it would make sense to look elsewhere for goals. I know most people disagree with the club looking for a loan striker, but there are very few strikers around at Championship level that could handle the step up, so a loan can be easier and enable the club to buy after promotion, or next summer when the rest of the team has been put together.
