The Jurgen Klopp revolution took a step forward in the summer, with the acquisition of a keeper to replace Simon Mignolet (finally I can hear all the Liverpool fans saying) and a new centre half, but it seemed a big mistake had been made as Liverpool failed to add the left back that seemed the most needed signing of all. Then disaster hit in pre-season as new goalie Loris Karius broke his hand and was out for the start of the season. Added to the club being forced to turn to James Milner at left back, it seemed the Reds would be struggling.
After an epic victory over Arsenal to open the season, then a shock defeat to Burnley, followed by conceding a late equaliser in a game they dominated, it was easy to believe it would be the same old story for Liverpool. That the lack of a specialist left back and inability to build on a good win would cost them any chance of a top 4 finish. Except that, in the past, the club did not have Klopp in charge.
Leicester saw Liverpool click into gear and demolish the reigning champions, despite conceding a silly soft goal and momentum has begun to build. Milner suddenly looks like a top class left back, the attack looks unstoppable, with new signing Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino looking particularly dangerous. The defence is more solid with Milner and the addition of new centre back Joel Matip, in front of Karius, though the soft goals are still an issue each and every game.
Is this finally Liverpool's year? Maybe so, maybe not, but it is difficult to see them not mounting a title challenge this season. In fact, for the first time in over 20 years, it would not be a shock if they did win the league, as they have a team to match anyone in the Prem, along with no European football to steal their focus during the season. The combination of that along with a top manager gives them their best chance of a Premier League title since the glory years of the 80s. Only time will tell if that is enough.
