Football News: Is Rangers Sporting Director Ross Wilson A Success or Failure?

Ross Wilson, Sporting Director at Glasgow Rangers, is he an overachiever, underachiever or somewhere in between?

He arrived in October 2019. Not one of us knows the full remit of his job. All we are interested in is seeing a winning team on the park.

1 SPFL title, 1 Scottish Cup victory and UEFA Europa League beaten finalists.
2019/2020 - last 16 of the UEFA Europa League
2020/2021 - last 16 of the UEFA Europa League

Financially, the above achievements have brought much needed revenue into the club. So the board will be happy with that part of the team's performance. That however doesn't satisfy the fans. We want trophies.

2 out of 7 counting this years Scottish League Cup defeat.
2019 players in under his tenure:- none
2019 players out under his tenure:- Grezda, Rudden, Atakayi, Houston and Herrera. None of us will moan about any of them being moved on.

2020 players in:- Hagi, Bassey, McLaughlin, Defoe, Balogun, Roofe, Itten, Zungu, Simpson and Wright. Most with hindsight will be disappointed with Itten, Zungu and Simpson.
2020 players out:- Flanagan, Polster, Alnwick, Foderingham, Holt, Rossiter, Halliday, Docherty and McCrorie. Again I can't see any of us getting sentimental about any of them. I haven't included those we sent on loan.

2021 players in:- Ofoborh, Sakala, Lundstram, Bacuna, Sands, Diallo, Zukowski and Ramsey. Again with hindsight Ofoborh ( who I feel deeply sorry for ) , Bacuna, Sands, Diallo, Zukowski and Ramsey.
2021 players out:- Barjonas, Stewart, Defoe, Barker, Edmundson, Jones, Bacuna and Patterson. Only one we are all disappointed to see leave is Patterson. But the offer was too good for the club to turn down.

2022 players in:- Souttar, Colak, Lawrence, Matondo, Tillman, Davies, Yilmaz, Cantwell and Raskin. Jury out on Souttar and Yilmaz, but I have high hopes for both. Matondo looks a miss.
2022 players out:- Balogun, Firth, Sands, Itten, Hastie, Aribo, Bassey, Middleton, Simpson, Katic, Kelly and McCann. I'm only disappointed in losing Aribo and Bassey but again the money involved is too good to turn down.

By my reckoning, Wilson has brought in over £40 million in transfer fees. He's shipped out 34 players and I would have only kept the ones who went for decent money - Aribo, Patterson and Bassey.

He's brought in 27 players and moved on 11 of these. So we are left with 16 players:-
Hagi, McLaughlin, Roofe, Wright, Ofoborh, Sakala, Lundstram, Souttar, Colak, Lawrence, Matondo, Tillman, Davies, Yilmaz, Cantwell and Raskin.

So again, from a player turnover perspective, then Wilson's remit will be a success. A huge turnover of players, but with the ones that are left from players bought in under his watch, would you happy with this for next season?

Raskin, Lawrence.
Tillman.
New RW, Colak, Cantwell.

Subs:- Wright, Sakala, Lundstram, Davies, Matondo.

Also leaves room for B Team, Jack, Kamara etc., depending on who's sold and released. Now all of the above doesn't excuse the lack of success on the Park.
