Tottenham Hotspur Season Review

As usual Tottenham Hotspur were a team in transition this season, with a new manager to bed in and establish his style of play and manner of training.

The season was full of the usual Spurs' inconsistent performances, with the obvious highlight being the win over the blue side of East London.

A squad full of players who are woefully unsuited for new man in charge, Mauricio Pochettino's chosen system, as well as struggling with the fitness demands of his training regime, can probably be blamed for a major part of the inconsistent performances.

The lack of quality in the squad was also shown up, with the emergence of Harry Kane rescuing the White Hart Lane team from midtable obscurity over the course of the season.

While they still have Christian Eriksen, and Nacer Chadli weighed in with his fair share of goals and assists, it was the meteoric rise of Kane that kept Spurs in there throughout the season.

To be fair, with the completely imbalanced squad he inherited, the best defender by far, Jan Vertonghen, trying to force his way out, Poch has probably done about as good as he could to finish 5th.

Having said that, Pochettino needs to hope the players still at the club show improved fitness and the club brings in the right players for his style or it will be a real struggle to take the club onto another level.

Kane will need help up front and that midfield needs a complete overhaul, as Mason and Bentaleb just do not work well and are easily overrun by the opposition.

With that in mind, fifth has to be seen as a decent season, giving the club a platform to build on for next season, but no more than decent, with so many other teams doing so poorly, Spurs have to think they should have forced their way into the top four this year.
