Transfers

Trio released by West Bromwich Albion following relegation. Boaz Myhill, Claudio Yacob and Gareth McAuley were all with the club for over 5 years.

Midfielder Michael O'Connor has moved to Lincoln City after rejecting a new deal with previous club Notts County. The 30 year old has a one year contract with the option of a further year.

Austrian midfielder Christoph Rabitsch has become Dundee United's fourth signing of the summer. The 22 year old has joined on a free after leaving Wolfsberger of the Austrian Bundesliga.

West Ham United's recruitment team have completed a second deal in two days with a £7m goalkeeper added to their ranks. Poland goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski has joined from recently relegated Swansea City.

MK Dons have made a double free agent midfield signing. Ryan Watson has just left Barnet, while Lawson D'Ath has come from Luton Town.

Millwall have paid an undisclosed fee for Murray Wallace from Scunthorpe United.

A double defensive signing has been made by Cumbrian side Carlisle United. They have picked up Gary Miller from Plymouth Argyle and Macauley Gillesphey from Newcastle United, both on free transfers.

Diallang Jaiyesimi has joined Yeovil Town on loan for the season from Norwich City.

Leicester City have splashed the cash to sign young midfielder James Maddison from Norwich City. The 21 year old has signed a five year contract after moving for a fee of over £20m.

Huddersfield Town have gone Dutch with the signing of Juninho Bacuna from Eredivisie club FC Groningen.

Rennes have signed midfielder Romain Del Castillo from Lyon for just under £2m.

Australian midfielder Oliver Bozanic has moved on a free transfer from Melbourne City to join Hearts.

Getafe have delved into the Uruguayan market to buy Mauro Arambarri from Boston River for £2m.

Damien Le Tallec has returned to French football from Red Star Belgrade on a free transfer. Le Tallec will be playing for Montpellier next season.

Bristol City's Icelandic centre half Hordur Magnusson has moved to Russia to join CSKA Moscow for a fee of £2.5m.

Equatorial Guinea midfielder Jose Machin has left Serie A giants AS Roma to drop to Serie B with Pescara.

Aymen Barkok has swapped one Bundesliga club for another, as he joins Fortuna Dusseldorf on loan from Eintracht Frankfurt.

Saint-Etienne's winger Jorginho has moved to CSKA Sofia on loan for the season.

 

Alexander Joins Club Just After Denying Them Promotion

Neil Alexander was in goal for Livingston as they beat Dundee United in the play-offs to foil their attempt at promotion. Following his retirement after the final, the 40 year old has now joined Dundee United as a goalkeeping coach. Alexander said: "I feel the time is right to give up playing. It is an exciting time for me in my career and I am looking forward to getting going. I have thoroughly enjoyed my career as a player and I now want to use all my experience to help Dundee United achieve promotion to the Premiership."

 

Burnley Draw Aberdeen In Europe

Scottish Premiership runners-up Aberdeen will face English Premier League side Burnley in the second qualifying round of the Europa League. It is Burnley's first time in Europe for over 50 years. Last season the Dons reached the 3rd qualifying round. Clarets manager Sean Dyche said: "Everyone knows it could have been anything, looking at the draw with the amount of different teams from different countries involved, and lo and behold we get someone just up the road. But we've worked hard to get here and we'll look forward to the challenge it brings."

 

Charlton Confirm Takeover Close

South London side Charlton Athletic and an Australian consortium have released a statement to confirm that the club is close to changing hands. Currently Charlton are owned by immensely unpopular Belgian businessman Roland Duchatelet, who has been publicly looking for a sale for a long time. Potential new owners Australian Football Consortium were established specifically to find an underperforming EFL side to buy.

 

Former Prem Player Reveals Mental Health Battles

Former Hull City defender Brian Lenihan has been forced to retire from football at the age of just 23 after a battle against mental health problems, following recurring knee injuries. Lenihan admitted on the 'Hard Knock Sports' podcast that he even tried to take his own life at the end of last year. Lenihan said: "It was a really dark period in my life from say July until December. I was struggling a lot, with football and with lots of other things, mainly my mental health. The reason why I did retire was due to illness, not injury. On 15 December, I attempted suicide. I was brought to hospital and transferred to the Priory Hospital in Altrincham. I spent three months there and had 12 sessions of electroconvulsive therapy." He is now hoping that it might help others in the same position to know that others also suffer.

 

Mexico Fined Again For Homophobic Chants

The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) has been fined 10,000 Swiss francs over the homophobic chants directed at opposition goalkeepers. It is the 10th time that FIFA have fined them over the same chant by the Mexican football fans. FIFA have also warned Mexico, for the second time in recent months, that further sanctions will be applied if the chants continue. The FMF has repeatedly asked the fans to refrain from using the chant, which features the Spanish word for male prostitute, which is usually sung when an opposition keeper is about to take a goal kick. Since the game, the Mexican team itself have also appealed to the fans to stop using the chant.

 

Danish Players Club Together For Private Jet To Send Knudsen Home

Danish defender Jonas Knudsen joined up with the World Cup squad knowing his wife was due to give birth in a few weeks' time but was forced to miss the birth after she entered labour far earlier than expected, while he was still in Russia with the Danish team. The rest of the players clubbed together to pay for a private jet to fly him home for a few days to see his newborn daughter.

 

England Manager Southgate Dislocates Shoulder

According to the English FA, Gareth Southgate has managed to dislocate his shoulder while running in the woods near the England training camp. Southgate said: "The doc has made it clear punching the air is not an option. I might not be celebrating any goals as athletically in future." That is, of course, assuming England score any more goals!

 

Singapore Pair Head To Wolves For Trial

Wolverhampton Wanderers are to take a pair of Singaporean brothers on trial this pre-season. Irfan and Ikhsan Fandi are aged 20 and 19 and will spend some time with Wolves. They have already had trials with Groningen this year.
