Review of the Day
Contracts
Eredivisie side Heracles Almelo hands one-year extensions to wingers Brandley Kuwas and Kristoffer Peterson. They are now locked in until 2020.
Another winger in the Eredivisie to get a one-year extension to tie him down until 2020 is ADO Den Haag's Elson Hooi.
In the Bundesliga Bayer Leverkusen have joined the one-year extension party by handing veteran Austrian keeper Ramazan Ozcan an extension to take him to 2020.
Heerenveen have also given out a couple of one-year deals, with Daniel Hoegh and Lucas Woudenberg now contracted until 2020.
Schalke 04 have agreed a new deal with Austrian striker Guido Burgstaller. The 29 year old's new contract runs until 2022.
Another one-year extension to run until 2020 is that given to Karim Onisiwo, 1.FSC Mainz 05's Austrian winger.
Kean Nearly Joined Milan
With new contract negotiations currently at a standstill with Juventus, Mino Raiola has come out and publicly confirmed that AC Milan tried hard to sign the explosive youngster Moise Kean in January. Raiola said: "Leonardo and I did everything we could do, but Juve said no." Kean has only started once this season, scoring twice in that game before being taken off in the 80th minute and that is a bone of contention between Raiola and Juve that is making a new deal almost impossible to sort out, "they're stopped at the moment," Raiola confirmed with regards to contract talks. "The boy will always have to play." However he did have better news over another client's new contract stating that Gianluigi Donnarumma will extend with AC Milan until 2024.
Agbonlahor Retires
Former England (just shows how bad England have been in recent years!) and Aston Villa striker (and I mean as in centre forward, though it often did look as though he was on strike on the pitch over the last few years) Gabriel Agbonlahor has retired. About 12 years too late. Agbonlahor left Villa at the end of last season and has not played a match since December 2017 (though played is used loosely). His announcement read: "The time has come to officially retire and watch Aston Villa as a fan. If I would have been told at school I would play nearly 400 league games, be the record Premier League goalscorer for Aston Villa, captain the great club and represent England at senior level, I would have laughed. I want to say thank you to all the supporters, the staff I have worked with at a great club and my ex-team-mates. The thought of playing for another team or playing against Aston Villa was something I just couldn't do. I look forward to whatever the future holds." He has a point, after watching him play I had to laugh when I saw he had done those things too. Particularly considering the 'performances' he put in over the last few years, when 'fit' (another loosely used term). 400 appearances? No wonder Villa were relegated!
Anderson Once Again Claims Bolton Sale Is Done
For the umpteenth time Bolton Wanderers owner and chairman Ken Anderson has told staff that the club is about to be sold. This is at least the second time that he has said that the agreement is done in principle and could be completed in the next 48 hours. The club has only a few more days before they are due back in the High Court over an unpaid tax bill for £1.2m.
Griffiths Back In Training
Celtic forward Leigh Griffiths is back for Celtic after taking a break from the game in December to deal with mental health issues. The 28 year old Scottish international will be focusing on fitness and performance work first as he looks to get back to playing.
Rangers Fan Punished For Bottle Throwing
Rangers' supporter David Roy has been banned from football for 18 months after admitting throwing a bottle into a crowd of Aberdeen fans during a game between Rangers and Aberdeen at Aberdeen's Pittodrie ground in August. Roy will also be required to carry out 135 hours of community service.
Jersey Refs To Strike
Football on the Channel Island of Jersey will be disrupted on Saturday as referees go on strike to protest against the bad behaviour of players, from abuse aimed in their direction from players, coaches and spectators to physical assault. A dispute has been brewing on the island for a long time now, with it almost coming to a head back in October when 10 red cards in 12 games saw referees threatening to quit the game. A Jersey Football Referees Association statement said: "Our executive met very recently and had an in depth discussion on this matter and came to a clear collective consensus that the time was now right for referees themselves to stand up and be counted and to seriously consider taking some form of action. Referees of all levels have been subjected to continued misconduct including that physical assault and lots of insulting and offensive abuse, often of a sexually inappropriate nature, which then become serious safeguarding and welfare issues. It was agreed that a message needs to be sent out to clubs, players of all ages, managers/coaches, parents and spectators that such incidents can no longer be tolerated, and if we don't act now island football will lose more referees which it simply cannot afford to do."
Chapecoense Survivor Dies
One of the 6 people who lived after a plane crashed that was carrying Brazilian football team Chapecoense, has passed away after a game of football with friends. 45 year old journalist Rafael Henzel had returned to his job in a local radio station where he had covered the football team after recovering from injuries suffered in the November 2016 crash. Henzel, who had broken 7 ribs in the crash in Colombia when their plane ran out of fuel, collapsed after a kickabout and was rushed into hospital but died after suffering a heart attack.
Bayern Break Transfer Record
Bayern Munich have broken their transfer record after spending 80m euros on France's World Cup-winning defender Lucas Hernandez from Atletico Madrid. The 23 year old will complete his move on 1st July, despite his medical discovering a knee problem in his right knee which required immediate surgery. Hernandez said: "This is a really important day in my footballing career. Bayern Munich is one of the best clubs in Europe and the world. I'm proud to be able to fight for all possible titles with Bayern."
The Duck Quacks Again
One-time Champ Manager wunderkind Alexandre Pato has found a new club after being released by Chinese Super League side Tianjin Tianhai. The now 29 year old forward, who first emerged at the age of just 14, is back in Brazilian football with Sao Paulo.
