Former St Johnstone, Burnley and Bolton manager, Owen Coyle, has been named as the new manager of Major League Soccer side Houston Dynamo. Coyle, 48, takes over from fellow Scot Dominic Kinnear who has moved to San Jose Earthquakes.

Coyle was heavily linked with the vacant Celtic manager job during the summer before the Glasgow club opted for Norwegian Ronny Deila and no doubt his decision to join Major League Soccer will raise a few eyebrows.

"We are very pleased to announce Owen Coyle as the new head coach of the Houston Dynamo," the Dynamos general manager Matt Jordan said.

"His top level experience, character, passion and ability to lead a group will be key factors as the team and club continues to evolve."

"He has a true respect and appreciation for the game in this country and of Major League Soccer, which was extremely important for us as a club moving forward."

Coyle's last job in the UK was taking over at Wigan in June 2013 where he had a disastrous spell in charge and not even lasting six months at the DW Stadium. Maybe the change of scenery will do Coyle a power of good, it's hard to believe that he was well-up on the short-list to replace Alex Ferguson at Manchester United before the Old Trafford hierarchy opted for David Moyes.
