Review of the Day
Contracts
Sevilla's teenage winger Bryan Gil has extended his deal until 2023.
French centre-back Frederic Brillant has signed a 2 year deal with Major League Soccer side DC United.
Also in MLS was Anthony Jackson-Hamel signing a 1 year deal with Montreal Impact.
France's World Cup-winning coach Didier Deschamps has signed a contract extension which will take him through to the end of the next edition of that competition in Qatar. Deschamps has been in charge since 2012.
Transfers
Bournemouth's Emerson Hyndman will make his loan move to MLS side Atlanta United permanent on 1st January.
Injury Round-Up
Bournemouth winger David Brooks will be out for at least 3 more months after the 22 year old needed a second ankle operation. Brooks suffered ligament damage in a pre-season friendly in July and was expected to miss 3 months, but has now had to have a second procedure.
Chris Smalling, currently on loan at AS Roma from Manchester United, has been ruled out until the New Year after picking up a knee injury.
Rafa Rules Himself Out
Rafael Benitez, currently managing in China with Dalian Yifang, has said he is not taking either the Arsenal nor the Everton jobs. Benitez said: "I can be very clear - there is no chance I will come back now because I'm really happy. I'm really pleased (Dalian Yifang) trust me. We have a lot of staff working on a big, big project. We want to leave a legacy and it's a challenge for me. I'm quite happy at the moment. In the future I would like to come back to the Premier League because I like the league. It was in the past, it's true that I was nearly there (at West Ham). Then Real Madrid came, and I needed a couple of days to know exactly what was going on. Obviously I couldn't say no to Real Madrid, but it was a good time and it's a massive club. Everybody can see both teams (West Ham and Arsenal) have problems, but both are massive clubs and they will do well at the end."
Hearts Dismiss Barnsley Claims
Heart of Midlothian have told Barnsley that their case for compensation over their appointing Daniel Stendel as head coach is "completely without merit". Stendel himself has stated that his contract was terminated with immediate effect in a statement on social media. Stendel said: "During my entire time at Barnsley, I gave my full commitment, energy and passion for the club and their supporters. The start to this season was very difficult though, but I always remained committed and accepted all the decisions of the board. This including the decision to terminate my contract with immediate effect. At the day of my dismissal, I wasn't informed about any detailed reasons."
Two Wolves Fans Arrested For Homophobic Abuse
Brighton & Hove Albion's home game with Wolverhampton Wanderers has been marred, right in the middle of the Premier League's anti-homophobia Rainbow Laces campaign, by two Wolves fans being arrested for homophobic abuse. Wolves have strongly condemned the behaviour, after the two fans were ejected by stewards and arrested outside.
Vandevoort And Fati Set Champions League Records
Genk goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoort has become the youngster goalkeeper to start a Champions League match at the age of 17 years and 287 days. The previous record was set in 2017 by Benfica's Mile Svilar, who was 18 years and 52 days at the time. Ansu Fati's goal for Barcelona at Inter Milan has meant he is now the youngest ever Champions League goalscorer at the age of 17 years and 40 days. The previous record was Peter Ofori-Quaye's goal scored when he was 17 years and 194 days.
Bald Eagle Passes Away
Legendary former manager Jim Smith, who managed clubs such as Derby County, Oxford United, Portsmouth and Queens Park Rangers, has passed away at the age of 79. An extremely popular man, he was known for his ability to improve players he worked with and willingness to keep up with the latest thinking and try to stay ahead of the curve in coaching.
Pereira Rules Himself Out Of Toffees' Running
Shanghai SIPG head coach Vitor Pereira has ruled himself out of taking the head coach role at Everton. Despite Sky Sports claiming Pereira was about to be appointed by the Merseysiders, Pereira told their news channel that: "It's an honour and I'm grateful to be considered by a club I have so much respect for but I am still coach of SIPG and SIPG is a club close to my heart. It means that in this moment I'm not in a position to make any other commitments. I need time to think and plan my future by looking at the options I have."
Ancelotti Given The Boot
Just a couple of hours after Napoli reached the knockout stages of the Champions League with a 4-0 win over Genk, the Serie A side sacked their manager Carlo Ancelotti. The Neapolitans were in a poor run of form going into the game, having not won in 9 games in all competitions and sit 7th in Serie A. A high profile dispute with club president Aurelio de Laurentiis has meant that the 4-0 victory was not enough to save his Napoli career.
