Football News: Chelsea become the first Premier League club to pay living wage

Top of the table Chelsea have become the first club in the Premier League to pay all of their staff at least the living wage and become accredited as a living wage employer.

Their staff, from cooks to cleaners, will all now be paid above the national minimum wage of £6.50 an hour, as the Living Wage Foundation has been campaigning for.

They have also begun a move to ensure that all staff brought in from sub-contractors will also be paid a living wage in future.

Chelsea Chairman Bruce Buck said: "As a responsible employer we are proud of this significant achievement for the club.

"We believe the move to the Living Wage underlines our commitment to ensuring that all our employees receive a fair rate of pay for their hard work and dedication. Quite simply it is the right thing to do."

I have to ask just one thing though, why are they the only club to do this so far? With the vast wealth in the Premier League, surely every club should be signed up to this?

Sorry that was two questions, but it is hard to understand how any club in the Prem can justify paying their staff any less than a living wage, and still call themselves a club!
